Best GRF packages

I haven't played the game in quite a while, and I'm just getting back into it.
What do you folks consider to be the best GRF packages that work well together?

There is no universal "best", what works for you depends on your style of playing.
Do you like to make massive transport systems, or model real-world, or have loads of eye-candy, or .. ?

You should take a look through this list and find some NewGRFs to your taste.

I'd start out with FIRS or ECS if you want more complex and diverse industries, TTRS for new houses, at least one set of vehicles for each category (for now I'd recommend probably no more than one, especially for trains, unless it's a very small one), and maybe some eye-candy (NewGRF Objects) like VAST or INFRA to get you acquainted with that sort of thing (Auz Lineside and Roadside Objects are pretty great too).

Every person have favourites but...
2 great starts:
- NewGRF List
- GRFCrawler
The first is mostly updated but second has photos :)

And you return to the game since a long time ago, the best option that covers your main desire:
- Best GRF packages that work well together.
With the extra of something new that maybe you don't know, is the Cars Series (born in last months of 2015); With this you have cars and some eyecandy and, if you use Cars Cars, has a special feature never seen before in OTTD: Vehicles with variable snow in them.

For 32bpp, some examples:
- 8/32bpp chinese trains in NML
- 32bpp China HQs
No words, you only see and enjoy.
Only one thing, every 32bpp set is really heavy in size and need more memory on your computer to work with them; The bad part of 32bpp :(

And for industries, don't start with FIRS or ECS. Is crazy, even in small configurations are too heavy and complex.
Try OpenGFX+ Industries. All in the series of OpenGFX+ is really recomended (but my favourites are landscape, industries, cars and trains).

And, I previously said, every person have his favourites...
Maybe the best start is to tell your favourite game style and, with this, someone may help you more.

Thanks for the responses. I'll check out the lists over the next few days.
I'm not drooling over eye candy, but having some for variation is good.

Try OpenGFX+ Industries.
I suggested FIRS or ECS precisely because they're a change from vanilla. OGFX+ makes sense if you'd rather stick to vanilla industries, but if you want something else entirely new, the other two are the way to go IMO.

Basic FIRS economies are probably comparable to vanilla in terms of difficulty in my experience; it's the extreme economy that's massive. ECS is definitely way harder, though, given its specific mechanics that heavily deviate from vanilla.

Next question.....
I haven't seen any references to user made maps.
Are there any? If so, where do I find them?

You can visit the scenarios section here in the forums, or you can take a look at the in-game content service ("Check Content Online" button) and browse through the Scenario and Heightmap types in the files list. In the latter case, many of the files have a link to their forum post ("Visit website" button), which can be helpful for pictures and details.

Usermade scenarios do exist, be alarmed however that most of them had been made on older versions of the game and thus are stuck using outdated data(including any lack of features, bugs and crashes(?)) of the version they had been made with.

Great - thanks for all the responses.
I'll check some of the maps, but probably avoid scenarios.

I've also noticed that some people talk about using maps with a lot of water in them.
Maybe I haven't been paying attention when generating a map, but is there a way to vary the amount of water on the map?

I've never thought about this before, but the German translation is a bit odd there. Every language I checked uses the equivalent of sea level, except for German, which uses (basically) "amount of water". Which I think is intuitively easier to understand, but, eh, not the same as sea level (Meeresspiegel <-> Gewässermenge).

In any case, you can click on sea level and type in an individual amount (as percentage, 90% water is the maximum I think).

Thanks for the explanation Pyoro - that explains a lot.
Yes - "amount of water" makes more sense.
I was taking it literally.
