Better big train stations ?
As I live in Paris (France) and work in the suburb, I take daily trains to go to work.
Paris is a "small" capital, but it is equiped with 5 big train stations (Gare de Lyon, Paris Austerlitz, Gare Montparnasse, Gare Saint Lazare, Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est) and many other smaller, for suburb traffic, usually called RER plus near than 100 in the suburbs.
And then... "What about?" it you will tell me...
Then all of these stations have about 20 or more tracks (Montparnasse have 28 !) and can handle double TGV trainset, that represent up to 2 * (2 + 10) = 24 wagons.
OK... So what?
In OTTD, we can't build stations as much big... And there is no use when transporting passengers !
First, allowing builing huge stations would be easy to do, so I think it will be possible as soon the "drag&drop" station system will be released.
However, one important thing to take advantage of huge stations is the catchment area. With very big stations, it will be impossible to get enought passengers or good to make profit with it !
So, I thought about a new system for catching area. Currently it's 4 cases width and is fixed for a 1 way station or a 8 way station.
What about a new system :
2 + station cases^1/2 width ? (2 + squared root or station cases)
=> 1 case station = 2 + 1^.5 = 3 cases width
=> 3 cases station (1 track of 3 cases) = 2 + 3^.5 = 3 cases width
=> 6 cases = 2 + 6^.5 = 4 (same as now)
=> 16 (4 tracks of 4 cases) = 2 + 16^.5 = 6 cases width
=> 300 (30 tracks or 10 cases) = 2 + 300^.5 = 19 cases
What about it ?

Re: Better big train stations ?
Ok, but the scale from real paris and a big OTTD city is not 1:1MagicBuzz wrote:Paris is a "small" capital, but it is equiped with 5 big train stations (Gare de Lyon, ...
that mean, ok you cannot have such big station, but you cannot either have such city...
I found yet that city are so small regarding the size railstations take...
Re: Better big train stations ?
I hope with the big map support that city size will change a little. No reason to multiply by 10, just double size should be rightfabca2 wrote:Ok, but the scale from real paris and a big OTTD city is not 1:1MagicBuzz wrote:Paris is a "small" capital, but it is equiped with 5 big train stations (Gare de Lyon, ...
