x500 Growth in 75 years!

Post by Aotrs Commander »

I started my current game in 1800, with (among other things) FIRS, eGRVTS 2 and the Early Rail packs in the tropical set, which I've not played in before. I tend to designate a certain city as my "capital", which tends to get the lion's share of the effort (and where the headquarters gets built.)

My objective with this game (and for which I'd tweaked the map for a scenario) was to see what I could do with the village of Rising Whisper (pop 56 - but technically a "city" (editor!)) and see how big I could make it, with the complexities of keeping it supplied and whatnot. Rising Whisper was set a fair distance from any other towns, so pax transport, among other things, was not very viable from the start...

I've concentrated most of my efforts on the island, but bits chugging away elsewhere (while I typical have the difficult set all the way down and no competitors, my self-imposed challenge is to implement every prototype (and the odd vehicle that comes in that I'm not offered the prototype) somewhere (even if I ditch it after the year).

I have just hit 1875, and Rising Whisper has hit 25,000 population.

Um.

For a while now, it's growth period is, like, one day! Is that normal...!

I don't know how that typically compares, but for me, the "capital" city in my last game only reached 20k by 2050, and I sort of think it had way more vehicles running to and from it by that point...! (That said, I started in 1833 with that game, so I had trains to take over from some of the road much sooner.)

I've actually reserved the land at the city's road juctions (it's running on 3X3 roads) to try and keep it contained a bit (it's not quite filled all that space yet.)

I'm... not quite sure at this point whether I should be bragging or submitting a bug report...!

Every town with 5 serviced stations will grow 1/day after it reached a certain number of houses (a single station is sufficient, but then you need more houses). That number depends on the town growth speed setting.

25,000 is far away from a big city. Some big cities can be found in the openttdcoop game archive. Examples:
http://wiki.openttdcoop.org/PublicServe ... gameid_247
http://wiki.openttdcoop.org/PublicServe ... gameid_241
http://wiki.openttdcoop.org/PublicServe ... gameid_228 <- the central town should be somewhere around 1.3 millions
http://wiki.openttdcoop.org/PublicServe ... gameid_207
http://wiki.openttdcoop.org/PublicServe ... gameid_201 <- total world population of more than 6 million in 512x512 tiles, with many towns above 100,000.

The typical timescale for town growth is about 80 years - a bit more if the town has to build its own roads. Towns can reach populations of more than 2 millions.

Fascinating.

Still got some way to go, then!

Makes me wonder how badly I managed to do not get anything even close in my previous game...!
