If you have original music, please feel free to submit it here. While all of the slots are currently full, I personally would like to see as much user-contributed music as possible.

But, at some point, it probably would be good to wrap this up. If nobody is able to make further contributions, then we just may need to move on.

Hi,
I've made quite a few MIDI compositions, some of which have a jazz style:
http://jmoey.zxq.net/pages/Music.html

If you would like to use any of them for anything then you don't need to ask. Also would it be possible to expand the number of slots available for music so that we can have as much music as possible in OpenTTD. It would probably only take a minor adjustment of code.

please add a license note (GPLv2) to your downloads or state here clearly that we can use your midis with that license. "You can use without asking" is no licnese ;-)

Edit: if you don't want to add GPLv2 to your downloads, load the midis up here, which you would allow us to use with GPLv2

Ok, you can use my midi's (http://jmoey.zxq.net/pages/Music.html) under the GPLv2 License. Also I'll try and update my website so that the midi files include a notice about that license.

you put the files where the readme tells you to, and then select the music set from the game settings window.

Let me clarify: I have a bunch of .mid files. I want them to be played by the in game jukebox. These file don't have a configuration file to go along with them. Just a bunch of .mid files. Can I have them played in game?

Absolutely! As soon as you create the meta data file (*.omb) that the in-game music player needs in order to find and load the files.
kamnet wrote: What is a base music pack?
A base music pack is composed of a meta data file (with a file extension of .omb), along with a collection of MIDI files (with a file extension of either .mid or .gm).

The meta data file will contain five sections:

Metadata - the name, version number and description of the music pack
Files - the file names of each MIDI file included
MD5 - the MD5 checksum of each file, to ensure that they are the original and correct file
Names - linking of each file name to a human-readable title that displays in the in-game player
Origin - expanded information about the music pack

The music pack can support a total of 31 MIDI files. The songs are organized into four categories: Theme (the theme song for the music pack), Old Style, New Style and Ezy Street. These are the categories as named by the original TTD game and the music in each category matched that theme. New music packs do not have to adhere to this style, or any style at all. The Theme category can only list one song, while the other categories can have up to ten songs each. Each category does not have to be filled with ten songs, but if there are not ten songs in each category there must still be a place listing in the meta data file, which can be left blank.
Feel free to check one of the .omb files to see the format. Don't forget, you need to run an MD5 hash on each file and record the checksum in the meta data file.

If these are original works, or if you can show proof that the original creators will allow them to be shared, you should consider adding it to the OpenMSX project. Contact me if you're interested.

Hi, before you close this project I would like you to consider my band for some submissions. I'm not going to post MIDI files yet, because I've been composing for many years and have a huge selection. It wouldn't be practical until you the community decides what they want, if anything. I'll post links to a few songs I have on youtube so far. My band has over 200 songs, so there's a lot more. If there is anything with vocals, 99% of the time I also have a midi with the vocals synthesized as another instrument. I think that OTTD should expand its musical genres, jazz is great for this kind of game, but I think latin, country, and oldies fit it well too. I think we could be considered part of the OTTD community, because me and 1 other band member have put well over a thousand hours of playing time into the game (: We're also on last.fm (click play radio to listen)

Yeah, I have everything in MIDI. I am posting youtubes to see what people are interested in before I post mids (: Even songs with vocals I have in midi, and vocals are replaced by midi.

I went to your YouTube page. So far I really like Baby K and Fast Lane Downtown. Would you be interested in taking a crack at making some more songs that are in a similar vein to the old TTD ones?

Hmm well it sounds like you are looking for something with more of an urban feel then, you don't want the smooth jazz song? I do have a bunch of funk midi songs that I could upload. In the meantime here are my latest uploads that could fit with the game.

Regardless of OpenMSX (in which topic we currently are), it's of course always possible to create another music set that focuses on other music styles.

On a second listen (with more sleep) She's Always Sensual does sound nice. Winter Room is also good.

When I'm listening to songs and evaluating them for OpenMSX, the two things that I think about while I'm listening are: 1) Does this remind me of the music from TTD? 2) Does it inspire me to want to continue playing? But, that's just my personal judgment. Planetmaker and others may have something else to say.

So far I've listened to a few pieces which you linked and I must say I'm quite impressed; there's loads of good stuff, also if not all pieces - from my personal subjective judgement - would fit this game (while still being a nice piece of music). Nice pieces include songs like Winter Room or also the Prairie Wedding (my favourite so far :-) ).
kamnet wrote:1) Does this remind me of the music from TTD?
I think that's a question which need not, maybe even must not be asked.
The important question is: Does it suit the game and its atmosphere?

Totally. Seeing the amount of songs you composed / performed, this is even a very realistic option.

Okay gentlemen thanks for the feedback, glad you like at least some of the songs. How many are you looking to replace on the main soundtrack? I really have no preference on which songs you choose, just making sure you heard it (: I'm not really looking to create any additional custom soundtracks for OTTD, but I wouldn't mind if someone did that. I just wanted to help out on the main soundtrack because OTTD is a dignified project in my opinion. All of these songs will already be in my own browser games at any rate (there are no copyright issues). If OTTD ever features more than 31 songs definitely contact me and i'll be glad to contribute more.

Here is my last batch, I won't post any more videos here unless specifically requested. I think there is a fair amount to choose from so far. Let me know which ones you decide on as a community and i'll post the midi files. If you want to hear more let me know, i'm sure i can find plenty more completed songs that may fit the game.

Taken another listen to Prairie Wedding, and I really like it too.

Why must not be asked? I'm not saying everything MUST sounds like TTD, but there have been a great number of complaints from individuals who are not happy with OpenMSX because it doesn't sound enough like the old TTD sound, which I can understand to a small degree. But, my opinion is only my opinion, and I certainly won't hold others to my opinion when it comes to getting this finished up.

Indeed! In fact, sometime this week I will be wrapping up my Traditional Holiday Songs pack and getting it out. Was hoping to hear back from a few more artists, but nothing so far. I'll go with what I have.

I don't think there's any set number, but if there are any songs that should be replaced, I'd say they'd probably be some of the ones from Jim Redfarm. They were pretty much dumped in just to fill out all 31 slots, after another user attempted to submit them as their own. My personal preference is to encourage donations that come directly from the community. (I'm not saying Jim Redfarm's work isn't good enough - indeed, his works could be an entire music pack of its own IMO. But, Jim wasn't a member of the community, either, his work was thrust upon us.)

And your contributions are VERY welcome!!!! After your inclusions, and maybe some follow-up from some contributors we've not heard from in awhile to see if they're interested in finishing up a few things, we'll put version 1.0 in the can and call it a day. :-)

Wow, absolutely amazing what you turn out. Going through the new ones, I like Cold City very much, and going back through the others you posted I like Pattaya Addict (maybe rename it to OpenTTD Addict??? )

So, summary of what I really, really dig so far, in order of preference: Fast Lane Downtown, Baby K, Cold City, Pattaya Addict, Prairie Wedding, She's Always Sensual, Winter Room. If all of those made it in, I think that would be a significant contribution.
