So, is it there yet?

Post by MegaStationMan »

Ive been away from TTD for a while, and I started playing with the patch again a couple of weeks ago. Brought another rail network to life.
I get back on here, and TTD patch appears to be dead. I never got into open TTD because when I left I dont think it was at the point where I could just swap.

Basically, I want to know where open TTD is. Can it do everything 2.5B9 could do? (I couldnt be bothered keeping up with the nightlies).
Or what can one do the other cant? Im very interested in the removal of train and map limits, but I'd like to be able to use the DB set.

I dont care about AI, as I like the "transport billions of goods" challange.

Edit: Path based signalling is a make or break for me

Nope, it´s far from dead. Take a look here:

http://svn.ttdpatch.net/trac/timeline

(Although this is almost all development for version TTDPatch version 2.6, aka "Nighlies" ...)

AFAIK, there´s still nothing like PBS in OTTD trunk, you´d have to use nightlies or even patches to get something like this: -> YAPP.

The nighties are just compiled versions from trunk (compiled every night) so they don't have pbs either. You can download a patch to get pbs in this thread (http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=36107)

Say what? Nightly and trunk are the same thing.

No they aren't, trunk is the status of the main development, the nightlies are a compiled version of trunk. A nightly doesn't have to be from the same revision as current HEAD though, when you talk about trunk 99% of the time you mean HEAD ;).

Xeryus... I just want to know how you almost have 12000 posts.

I don't think I've ever been to a forum where one user has anywhere near that many...

How do you do it?

On topic: Patch isn't dead and Open isn't a replacement.

This question seems to be important for many people for some reason.

The main reason i chose openttd over ttdpatch, and as far as i am concerned the main difference, is that openttd is a windows application whereas ttdpatch is essentially a DOS one. This means if you want to browse the internet or do other things whilst playing you can in openttd but it's harder with patch. For anyone with 2 monitors this is a big deciding factor, i did try ttdpatch but didn't like not having simpsons or whatever playing in my other monitor.

Just about every other difference can be covered with patches.

Last time I checked (which was not too long ago), Patch was capable of running in windowed mode, just like the Windows version of TTD.

Patch can run in Windows either in Full Screen or Windowed mode.

I run OTTD and TTDP exactly the same.

Which would be why, when attempting to start ttdpatchw.exe in DOS, I get the message "This program cannot be run in DOS mode."
Nice to know.

Also nice that you know more about TTDPatch than a TTDPatch Developer.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

And since when is OpenTTD Windows™ application? AFAIK it runs on many different platforms (and TTDPatch too is capable to be run in linux through wine for example.. Dunno about mac.)

I heard that work on Turing's machine port is in progress :)

Ontopic: Really, running DOS based software has become so easy, that it should not matter at all. I didn't use TTDPatch for too long, but I've never had any problems running it in windowed mode.

Well, maybe not quite, but I did get a DOS port working to some degree recently, even doing networking! I might finish it off one day if I can get the graphics driver working properly. :P
