[OTTD] Lartigue Monorail Project

Post by DanMacK »

In 1888, the Listowel & Ballybunion Railway opened in Ireland. This line was unique in the fact it was a monorail. It lasted until 1924, and while it barely made a profit, it proved that the technology was sound.

This started set as a whim, but I'm committed to making this a valid set.

A few sprites have been drawn, and more will be posted soon.

Awesome! This is a project that can make the monorails function be used in a much more realistic way: this network was mostly built on level ground, like the monorails in TTD, and unlike monorails are mostly used today (on elevated tracks).

I think the front lights in the / and view can be bigger, since those things were pretty massive IIRC.

Aren't those sprites a little oversized?
--- Licenses: GNU LGPL, version 2 or newer, code and graphics. CC-By-SA, graphics, alternatively. If you're using any, I'd like to hear about it --- Call them "track types" ---
--- Mostly inactive developer for: NuTracks - Central European Train Set --- Running/compiling for: Linux (x86) - Android - Windows (32/64 bit) ---

--- Need a file packer? 7-Zip --- BOINC - use your computing power to benefit science --- Block trackers, not ads --- Unix in dispersible pellets, the formula for the future. ---

Well, it was designed to be cheaper to build than conventional rail, which would be its advantage here. Although it will have a high running cost and relatively low speed, so it'll be a challenge.

Not really. They may need to be a bit wider, but they're set lower on the tile as well.

The sheer size surely lit the track ahead well but I wonder if the drivers could possibly see anything beyond the back of the 'lighthouse' .

There's video of it working on British Pathe's site...

http://www.britishpathe.com/video/along-the-line

NO "Lighthouse" on it there though :]
Doesn't look to be the smoothest mode of transport of the time however

Well, given that the last post on the topic was in 2012, which is 11 years ago, you can be pretty sure that it is dead.

Also, DanMacK who created this was last active here in September 2022, a solid 7 months ago, so the forum does not seem to be a high priority for him.
