luxtram buildings
Here is my first attempt to make some Luxembourg buildings. This is one of the office buildings close to the old town (see also second attachment for the reference).
It is currently in the prototype stage and some advice is needed as I am fairly beginner at this.
1) How should I make it more apparent that the house is covered with tiles?
2) Is it a good idea to use different shades for different depths?
3) Is the left side not too dark?
4) I could not get the entrance much better, can somebody help me with this?
5) If I leave the left side as it is (i.e. no windows) then how should I make it more lively?

Re: luxtram buildings
I have been working on apartment and office buildings but decided to make small deviation from it.
This is a very typical Luxembourg family house. They come in very various colors from pale to very colorful or even black. Strong beautiful colors are not rare.
Here I chosen rose and light beige with sandstone ornaments for this presentation.
While this is a very simple house, windows are often more decorated. Even fancier decorations are not uncommon.
Some people have renovated their attic and have installed modern ventilation system and gas heating.
More Decorated Variants

Re: luxtram buildings
Of course these houses do not come in standardized incarnations. Big variety and personalization is very familiar to Luxembourgers.
Roof extensions do not have to be on the outer sides, or symmetrical, or present at all.
Sometimes smaller roof windows should do, or even modern roof windows installed during the attic renovation. Naturally it comes down to the peoples possibilities at given time.
It is normal that some people have more ambitions than others.

Re: luxtram buildings
these are looking pretty nice, I like that you've drawn so many variants to them.
All my projects are GPLv2 License.

Re: luxtram buildings
Those are cute!! Some houses in The Netherlands also look like that!
May I suggest placing them closer to the road side (so that the stairs start at the edge of the tile) and then add sheds or gardens at the new room at the back?
And (as you are starting with drawing them), before you add details and textures, also do a flipped version for the other direction (corrected for shade/sun ofcourse, but that is easier done without the details and textures) and maybe also backviews? That way these buildings can easily be put into a house set.
And, very important, could you please state what license you want to use for your work. That way others know if they may or may not use your work in the future.

Re: luxtram buildings
My plan is to create a house set that has either all the possible combinations or creates all the variants based on some local sequence (if something like this is possible) or by random (I think this is somewhat less preferred option).
These sprites are released with GPLv2 licence and I have also included GIMP file so it would be easier to play around with various presented and few unrepresented options.
Of course as I work on, this version would become dated fairly quickly.
As such, I would really appreciate when somebody around here would help me to kickstart the coding (nml) part of the job.
I would be also really thankful when some more seasoned people could point out all the silly drawing mistakes I made as I am just a beginner in this.
These houses can reside in one long line (tens of houses) without a break. Or depending on the area, they are situated in group of 2 or 4 houses. In such cases houses at both ends of the group have often tilted roofs and side windows.
In rare cases such houses are also located in their private slot but most of the time you will find different kind of the houses there.
These houses also have backyards of various sizes and so I have to draw these as well. The backs of the houses are even more distinct with various extensions and terraces.
I also plan to include few modernised versions of these houses.

Thank you! I actually wanted to do some more but had to stop somewhere.Silverx50 wrote:these are looking pretty nice, I like that you've drawn so many variants to them.
I want to do also set of a slightly different houses (where roof goes straight to the top).

Thanks!Quast65 wrote:Those are cute!! Some houses in The Netherlands also look like that!
I think I would like to use an additional tile instead as many of the houses do have basement level garages (with a sloped driveway) and many of them have various backyard side extensions of various sizes and forms.Quast65 wrote:May I suggest placing them closer to the road side (so that the stairs start at the edge of the tile) and then add sheds or gardens at the new room at the back?

Yes, flipped versions, corner pieces and back views are in the plans.Quast65 wrote: And (as you are starting with drawing them), before you add details and textures, also do a flipped version for the other direction (corrected for shade/sun ofcourse, but that is easier done without the details and textures) and maybe also backviews?
Re: luxtram buildings
This is an apartment set I am working on.
It is based one the apartment buildings I saw during my Lisbon vacation (where I broke my elbow and thanks to what I now "have" plenty of time to practice my drawing skills as it is few of the things that I could do by one hand without getting overly annoyed)
This project is at the moment mostly in the exploration stage where tried to come up with different apartment house shapes that can be later combined and extended.
Next stage is to add different views and sizes and include more details (like roof apartments etc).
These sprites are licensed under GPLv2. I also included the GIMP files.

Re: luxtram buildings
Time for the next update.
This is an notorious apartment building in the Dommeldange area and as all apartment houses in Luxembourg it has a name. It is called "Terrasses de l'Europe" and it has a web page and also a Flickr page (so you can actually see in detail what is on the roof).
Actual building contains 5 of such blocks.

Re: luxtram buildings
very impressive work on the shape of the building. I took a closer look at it in PS and I'm impressed.
is the roof drawn with the ttd pallet this time?

No, as I have not looked for the systematic approach. It is actually really easy to fix once the solution has been found.Silverx50 wrote:is the roof drawn with the ttd pallet this time?

Re: luxtram buildings
You don't even need to adhere to the palette, you can use any colors you want and make these 32bpp graphics as-is.

Re: luxtram buildings
These are apartment buildings in one of the earlier residential zones in Kirchberg.
This is an early preview, bus as it comes with all the sources and GPLv2, it would be possible to use these if everyone wishes. If have not fully decided on the color of the buildings and this is very approximate color possible far from the final version.
Also balcony barriers of the two brown buildings and the all the penthouses are not yet colored at all.
Buildings in the long apartment block fit into 1 tile unless they are with the balconies, then larger area is needed.
Brown buildings are can be combined into seamless wall to wall row and in the case of twin block, can be also used separately.

This is set of unfinished apartment buildings from another area in Kirchberg (near the office buildings I am drawing).

Re: luxtram buildings
Thanks! These are a bit unfinished, but I put them here anyway, so that I could ask you to check these and all other buildings here and consider if some of these could be suitable for your planned Dutch houses set.Silverx50 wrote:some nice looking apartments man, I really like them.
Just note that all these are are drawn without concern about the palette and I have to convert them into OpenTTD palette before you can use them.
