Danish Houses Set

Post by Krutzelpuntz »

This project is currently on pause for an unknown amount of time, due to sickness. The license is GPL2, so feel free to use what ever you want from here, or even continue the project. I'm sorry for the lost expectations, but there is noting I can do about it, except try and get better :)

I need some help getting this to work, so some fingers pointing me in the right direction would be very helpfull.
All I know is how to draw.

Have a suggestion, idea or comment?
Put it in the project spreadsheet

I think you are going in exactly the right direction - simply drawing stuff. And you are doing it super well, your drawing skills are very apparent.

I would probably suggest trying to make a mockup and putting it into the game in photoshop at least, just to see how it fits.

Especially since there are various base sets, the outcomes can vary a lot... I personally believe that 8bpp should fit the original TTD base set.

... The today's progress buildings seem to lack some details on the walls to me ... even if random messy pixels :)

Thanks, the comment is very appreciated, V453000 ;)

It really helps when other people look at your stuff and tells what they see.

A grimey improvement to the walls, and a... s*** tank..?

It's not done, but I feel the shape is off..?
Am I right, or is it fine?! :S

They are, but as I see it, you just draw an isometric square, and make a circle inside.

Catch my drift? Anyways, I'm really figthing to wrap my head around this isometric thing, I'm used to draw 2d side view
Probably have a lot of perspective errors hidden in my stuff already

Tried to make a station building, and the slurry tank(?) got filled up.

I'm just putting up my progress here, hope you guys don't mind.

What a great begining of a danish building set :D

Being from Denmark, I can really say that these buildings are spot on! 8)
The only thing that comes to my mind is the scale. It seems that the scale are a bit different between the different buildings?

One more thing: The slurry tank looks great, but I wonder if it really should be included in a town set? Hopefully these are normally not placed inside cities. They might fit better in an industry set?

Thank, I really like the classic architecture of Denmark, it's really pleasing to look at :)

How would one go about the scale issue? I did realize i had difficulties with it, as I just have to guess the size of the buildings.

The slurry tank, and the farm outhouse was meant for the farm industry, don't worry, no poop in town ;)

The scaling issue is very hard in OTTD

An idea could be to chose a scale, like one tile = X m.
Then you can messure rough lengths an widths of buildings in GoogleEarth (or other programmes), and recalculate this to pixels.

I dont know how other building sets handled the scalling issue.

Speaking of which, that watertower is in dire need of a rescale, but I'll show it anyways, it turned out nice :)

And a common village church.

Edit: Alright, I just fell over a thread with some guys talking about palettes.
Is this game pallette restricted? ?( If so I'm screwed... :(

E2: Can anybody explain to me the difference between 8bit and 32bit.
Would I be able ro run the game as it looks in 8bit in a 32bit game with my sprites?
I'm pretty confused, as said, I just know how to draw ;)

Yes, you can use any colors you want these days and it can be sorted out just fine.

These are looking really good. As a Swede, I would surely hope you would expand this set from being the "Danish House Set" to the "Scandinavian Building Set" or something like that  We do have Swedish Houses, so you could check those out for inspiration.

As for creating the NewGRFs, there are two ways:
1) Read and understand how to code
2) Keep creating really nice buildings and someone who knows how to code them might do so, because they want them ingame

As V453000 :) already suggested, make a mockup. Take a screenshot from openttd (ctrl+s or some dropdown menu), and edit your sprites in it. That helps you in seeing how things would look in-game, it also helps in making people want to code your sprites, if you post it as "teaser for a coder" ;)

Thanks, praising words are very motivating, but please also say what could be better,
it's the best way of improving my work.

I have kinda come to the conclusion that most of my buildings are too large.
They wouldn't fit the vehicles, and if anybody wants to use some these buildings in relation to other buildings,
it would be nice to have some kind of uniform scale.

Especially as my style has another way of showing light and shadows that what is used in OTTD, so they already stand out.

Any tips how to get the scale right is appreciated.

Here's a mockup of a small village.
Lot of repeating houses, but it will get better with more work, of course..

Image

I don't want any coding yet, as it is very ''alpha'', and I need to correct the scale and colors.
But eventually is I pull this off, I'd love to have a helping hand at the coding!

If anybody has wishes for a building within the subject they would like me to draw, suggestions are welcome.

I would like this to stay danish, I may add a few Swedish inspired barns or something.
Looking at what you have got, you are already well on your way yourself :)

Edit: Rescale in progress. I'm beginning to think it is a matter of trial and error, but I'm not looking much forward to rescaling all I got.
Maybe except the 4 story houses, I think they are fine..?

They may be a tad large at the default zoom level, but lets not throw away all your hard work! How do they look at the 2x zoom level? :)
