Re: Australian AuzTrains and NSWTrains

Post by GarryG »

Going through the coding of each of the Passenger Carriages and Freight Wagons.

When I first made these sets over a year ago, I didn't understand much of the coding (and some I still don't) .. so I left the coding as is that I copied from the 2cc Train in NML set. Just changed the vehicle references to the graphics .png file names and put in the year it entered service.

Didn't fully understand these codes until recently. Been experimenting with them to understand what they do.

Code: Select all

vehicle_life:
        loading_speed:
        cost_factor:
        running_cost_factor:
        speed:
        cargo_capacity:
        weight:
Last release of the train sets on previous page I had changed the speeds, cargo capacity and weight, but not the others .. there where still set for what they originally where in 2cc sets.

I am now going through each of the vehicles and reducing the "cost_factory and "running_cost_factor" .. I changing these in my games to a cheaper costs since the vehicles in my sets carry less capacity then those in the 2cc Train in NML sets. It will make them less expensive to run and hopefully more compatible with other train sets available.

"Loading_speed" haven't changed left these as they are.

"Vehicle_life" most where 25 and 30 years .. I made them all 40.

Still doing graphics changed to freight wagons. This I feel will take me a few more weeks to do maybe a bit longer.

Cheers

Started again with graphics with the train sets.

Just didn't have them right. So I practiced with the red sprites previous page and had red trains running around till I got them looking better and riding the rails.

The show all 5 sizes from 4 thru to 8.

I'm hoping now I got the sprites right .. and I also made templates as well so should be reasonably easier to re-do what locomotives and rolling stock need doing

The 36 class loco in Image 2 .. middle one .. doesn't seem to be riding the rails properly .. so wonder how many more have this problem.

Here's the templates if any one like to use for making their own trains.

Some templates have Box Cars from 2cc Trains in NML .. I used them with the red sprites as a guide to make what I wanted.

Getting side tracked again from main task I want to do .. :)

Anyone like piggy back trains :?:

Some parts of Australia they drive trucks on to railway flat wagons and travel by train over long distances .. there be passenger coaches on train for truck drivers to rest. I think US has these too . not sure about other countries.

These trucks courtesy of Polroads and in company colours.

Intend to recolour them so not all be same, and change some dogs and trailers so some be different.

I think they only do limited Trailer on Flatcar services these days in USA and Canada if any at all, I don't think they really do "Vehicles" on trains on their route (the only time you'll usually see vehicles on trains is when they're the cargo, and not a "passenger")

EDIT : From wikipedia
Canada

Canadian Pacific Railway runs a rolling highway service between Windsor, Ontario and Montreal (and further east). This corridor is normally truck serviced on the Interstate 75, Ontario Highway 401, Quebec Autoroute 20 line, but this route becomes heavily congested in several areas, especially around Toronto and Montreal. CP's service also means the trucks are only driven for short distances on either end of the route, avoiding overnight stops and greatly reducing costs in some situations. This service now accounts for a considerable percentage of CP's traffic along its Lake Ontario mainline route.

You might want to reduce the size of the trucks, they look huge in comparison to the engines. Nice train otherwise. As for other instances of RORO/"rolling highway" trains, there are some in Europe and apparently in India.

Thanks nekomaster .. outback Australia between Adelaide and Perth they did and I think are still doing this.

Might be an idea as a cargo for those who play a Industry set that has Vehicle Industries.

Just an idea at the moment ..

Still fiddling with the train sets.

Altering graphics a bit on some and adding more rolling stock so new and better vehicles will appear often.

Comparing mine with 2cc Trains in NML.

The 4-wheeled wagons in 2cc carry a lot more then what they do in mine as I making mine carry actual as in real. 2cc carries 18 ton and mine at start carry 6 tons. Running cost of 2cc is $548 a year so I made mine $182 a year.

Will take 3 of my wagons to carry same as 1 of 2cc wagons .. 3 times $182 equals $546 .. so close enough be same.

Purchase 4-wheeler from 2cc cost $842 .. making mine $280 .. so to buy 3 still cost you $842.

Hope to do similar to all rolling stock. Where mine carry less then the 2cc change the costs so it averages out about the same.

Difference being to carry 180 tons of cargo will take 10 of 2cc wagons compared to 30 of my wagons.

By 1894 they could carry 8 tons, 1902 carried 10 tons, 1907 increased to 16 tons. Not sure yet when bogie Open Wagons were available .. I do know they entered service prior to 1894 but actually year they entered service that I don't know yet. Known as G wagons and they carried 15 tons.

Hope this idea will work .. haven't tried it yet as still doing some graphics work and adding new rolling stock.

Still working on the train sets.

Went train spotting other day and a ride to get some ideas.

Watched a container train pass with both empty and loaded container wagons heading north possibly heading to Moree.

This got me thinking with game play how we have empty container trains heading to Industries and they load containers full of cargo to come back .. but who takes the empty containers to that Industry?

So I making up some container wagons that will randomly give you both empty and loaded wagons when train is running empty. The containers represent empty containers. When reach destination will load a different colour container on that wagon.
EmptyContainerTrains.png
EmptyContainerTrains.png (19.55 KiB) Viewed 2733 times
Also thinking some other wagons that run empty maybe the odd loaded wagon might look good on the train. For instance open wagons running empty, might look nice if there is the odd tarpaulin wagon on train too.

Shall keep experimenting see if can improve on this idea.

Something of interest .. found out that Bogie Coal Hoppers and Bogie wheat wagons in NSW was not available till 1951 .. this will mean for carrying Minerals and grains will need to use the faithful 4-wheeled wagons.

Also found out I had speed wrong for the 4-wheelers, I thought they restricted to 40 km/h, but re-read it and that was 40 mph .. so they now been increased to 60 km/h.

EDIT:

Also thinking to add the odd empty container wagon to loaded trains .. although there be no container on that wagon, it still be classified as loaded .. just showing it empty for the novelty of the train.

I am all for more diversity in trains, andy does it too, by having open wagons for almost(?) anything, even if realism says it's a bad idea (it never rains in OpenTTD, no need to shelter cargo from it :) ).

Showing wagon graphics that contradict with the state of the wagon is something I am less sure of. I like the idea, but the user could get confused. It will need experimenting indeed.

Empty graphics for full wagons sounds like a recipe for confusion and bug reports IMHO, assuming I understood this correctly. It's instinctive for me nowadays to expect wagons showing partial or full sprites to have partial or full cargo and vice-versa; if I saw an empty wagon, my first thought would be that it's indeed empty, and having to double-check the details window every time and not having the visual cue any more sounds more frustrating than fun to me, personally. But that's just me, of course. :)

You both right about that and many wouldn't read the changelog and readme files if I put instructions there to explain it. :)

The idea sounded good but has its draw backs.

Not sure how much longer I be overhauling the train sets. Maybe another week to finish the freight wagons.

Doing the freight wagons one at a time like I been doing been finding a few glitches (in the coding and graphics) that been there from when I made the first releases over a year ago. So like to check all the locos and passenger carriages as well.

Thanks Alberth and Kalen for your feed back .. much appreciated.

Most people probably wouldn't read the readme, although I think anyone who's been on top of your updates would probably notice it in the thread. There's also the option of adding a noticeable bit about it in the description in the online content service, for example.

My main concern is that it would probably be a rather chaotic change since it breaks intuitiveness and reflex. It's not just about taking into account a new change in gameplay (like when you install an industry set, or a vehicle set with special properties), it's a change that I think our brains would have quite a bit of trouble adjusting to, and if that happens, it might result in more bothersome complaints/"reports" than worth it.

But if you believe this idea is worth giving a shot as an experiment (and I'm certain there's more people who'd enjoy it regardless of any potential weirdness), then I think you should try it out just to see what happens. Just because a feature might turn out to be a "bad feature" is no reason not to try it. :P

I like the idea of random "Empty" containers on an empty train. I'd definitely use that.
Also, have you decide what to do with trucks on flatcars?

Hi Pete,

Like to put trucks on flat tops, but I wait till I finish fixing the rest of the freight wagons first as I need to try out my artistic skills to see if I can shrink the trucks slightly .. first go was unsuccessful.

I'm experimenting at moment when need to carry GOODS that the train will not be all same type of wagons. Hoping I can make it so train will be a mixture of Flats, opens, louvred, Tankers, livestock and hoppers and all carrying GOODS.

I been making Mixed Wagon trains.

These are bogie wagons size 6 that entered service in 1902.
MixedGoods 1920.png
MixedGoods 1920.png (16.59 KiB) Viewed 2645 times
Each trains are designed to carry the same cargo.

One carrying all GODDS, another carrying FOOD, one Engineering Supplies and one carrying Wool.

If want to carry just Goods will give you a mixed train of 8 different wagons. Other cargos such as Wool, Food, Engineering Supplies, and some others give you 6 different types of Wagons.

My coding is from 2CC Trains in NML .. they had the freight wagons separated in 5 different sections representing the sizes and years available. I been changing this as some small wagons where still being made in the 1950s.

Bogie coal hoppers and gran wagons was not available till 1951. Wheat wagons at this time where cleaned out Coal Wagons and covered with tarpaulins .. I have included these in the game. Proper bogie Wheat wagons came available in 1953 and when harvest was on the coal wagons with tarpaulins were still used. I have made available these types of wagons for the game. A improved Wheat Wagon was available at a later date with larger capacity and higher speed. made these available in 1956 until I find the correct date.

If any one want to see where I am up to with changes here the latest newgrf file.

I am redoing wagons dated later then 1960s .. did have them finished, but had the gap between wagons to pixels .. like to change them back to 1 pixel gap. Wagons from 1854 to 1960s I think are all done except Mixed Wagons for the 4-wheeled wagons.

I often make mixed wagon trains using many different GRF's, so I see where you're coming from with this. Nice!

This saves going through all the different types looking for what wagons do what of that particular size.

Hope when finished the other mixed sets if you want a mixture of 4-wheelers and different length bogies then this make it easier.

Anyone after the source to what I done so far.

All done in NML coding and graphics. Includes both NSWTrains and AuzTrains version 15.
