NekoMaster wrote:I guess that sounds good, I'm more use to having diesels and electrics still having some usage suggestions, but as you said, most diesels are designed for mixed use, though I know a few are built for express stuff like passengers. I do believe though there are some diesels more geared towards freight like the 421 ClassBut I guess I'd be happy for now with steam engines having some suggestions so that I can have an idea what to use them for.
When diesel started to enter service they started replaced steam on Express Passengers first.

When I started on railways in 1970 .. steam was still being used on suburban passenger trains in the Newcastle area and on many heavy goods and coal trains.

The C38 steam locos where built in the early 1940s for Express Passenger trains, but in the 1960s they were seen double heading with a Beyer-Garrett on heavy goods.

I've seen pretty well all classes of diesels on passenger trains. I used to think when I first started on railways that the 45 class was a goods train loco until I seen one on the Newcastle Flyer Express Passenger train.

The 48, 47, 49 classes more designed for branch line working of both passenger and goods, but did see them on Newcastle Suburban passenger trains when steam finished in the mid 1970s.
NekoMaster wrote:In other news, I wonder if there will ever be any Tasmanian stuff for the set.
The hardest part for me doing other State railways is getting the technical details of them .. there are some websites that has information on steam and diesels of other States, but difficult findings anything on their passenger coaches and freight vehicles.

Like to do passenger carriages of other States especially their Express services.

Would data for Tasmanian locomotives from wikipedia be acceptable? I have seen some pages on Tasmanian locomotives that included enough data for OpenTTD

I know of some sites to help with locos.

This one has all States: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category: ... _Australia

Includes diesels and steam.

And this one has some rolling stock. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category: ... _Australia

I have list of basically all Passenger Carriages and Freight Wagons in New South Wales .. got diagrams of almost all the Freight Wagons :) .. have information on everything about them except years each type entered service :( .

NekoMaster wrote:I wonder though, it might be a bit of work but for people unfamiliar with Australian motive power, I was wondering if it might be possible to add some extra text to the locomotives like I did for my NARS Addon to provide "Suggested Usage", like for example, I'm pretty sure the QR Class 2100 diesel-electrics would have "Suggested Usage : General Purpose" or the NSWGR AD60 Garrats "Suggested Usage : Heavy Duty"
I started doing what you suggested about usage of locos and also passenger carriages. You can see what I had a go at doing in this copy of NSWTrains attached.

NSW Steam locos I have added to label either (Pass & Goods), (Suburban Passenger), (Express Pass & Goods), (Goods) and (Heavy Goods).

Some diesels I know that was used for shunting, local work and branch line services also been labelled.

Passenger Coaches been labelled either (Suburban), (Express) or (Mail & Express). Carriages used on XPT and Silver City Comet have been labelled to tell you what diesels to use with these carriages.

In the ChangeLog file I started listing Marshalling of some trains in my State such as:

Newcatle Flyer (Sydney to Newcastle) = (NUB SET) HFN, FN, FN, BN, BN, FN and HFN
Cessnock Express (Sydney to Cessnock) = (NUB SET) HFN, FN, FN, BN, BN, FN and HFN
Southern Highlands Express (Sydney to Goulburn) = (NUB SET) HFN, FN, FN, BN, BN, FN and HFN
Brisbane Express (Sydney to Wallangarra) = (NUB SET) HFN, FN, FN, BN, BN, FN and HFN
Newcastle Flyer (Sydney and Newcastle) = (HUB SET) HFH, RFH, BH, BH, RBH, FH and PFH (Some services also had a MHO)
South Coast Daylight Express (Sydney and Nowra) = (HUB SET) HFH, RFH, BH, BH, RBH, FH and PFH
Central West Express (Sydney to Orange) = (HUB SET) HFH, RFH, BH, BH, RBH, FH and PFH
Suburban services between Sydney, Newcastle, Goulburn, Lithgow and Nowra = (CUB SETS): HFL, FL, FL, BL, HFL or HFL, FL, FL, FL, BL, BL, HFL.
Southern Aurora = PHN, LAN, NAM, LAN, NAM, LAN, BCS, RMS, DAM, LAN, NAM, KAN, NAM, MHN
Indian Pacific = HM, ARJ, ARL, ARM, AFC, DF, CDF, BRJ, BRJ, BRJ, ER and HGM
Canberra Monaro = 2 DEB SETS (DMU) Total 8 Vehicles
Riverina Express = PHS SFS SFS SFS RS OBS SBS MHO
Intercapital Daylight = PHS SFS *SFR SFS RS *OBS SBS SBS MHO
No.45 Mail to Dubbo = *TP MHO KP FS MAL (or TAM) BS FS EHO MLV (louvred van)

When I did the Intercapital Daylight and No.45 Mail I notices there are carriages I haven't added to the train sets yet.

So looks like I got some more Carriages to make.

Added the Spirit of Progress to the AuzTrains and NSWTrains.

Between 1937 and 1962 the Spirit of Progress operated between Melbourne and Albury on the Broad Gauge line.

When the standard gauge line opened in 1962 between Albury and Melbourne the Spirit of Progress was converted to run on the Standard Gauge Melbourne to Sydney.

When it ran all way to Sydney often had Power Van, Sleeping Cars and sometimes the Dining Car off the Southern Aurora.

If like to try here AuzTrains version 7. It also has the carriages mention in above post.

Added a 1100 Class Rail Car known as Budd Cars and the 1200 Class rail Cars known as Tulloch Cars.

The 1100 Class rail cars, or the "Budd Cars", as they were more commonly known, were based on the stainless steel rail cars produced by the Budd Corporation, of Philadelphia, USA, suitably modified for NSW conditions.

The 1200 class rail cars were based on the Budd (1100 Class) layout of a double ended rail car with twin underfloor engines and hydraulic transmissions. However, these cars differed from the 1100 Class, being constructed principally of aluminium.

Since these where based on a American design I thought it appropriate that I did the same so I based mine on Voyager One's USA_Amtrak_Budd_RDC from the 2cc TrainsInNML set.

1100 and 1200 class.png (233.3 KiB) Viewed 3277 times
The 1200 classes are on the top track and 1100 class lower track.

The 1200 class was used on the Riverina Express between Sydney and Albury .. when train arrived at stations along the main line one of the cars would be detached to services the branch lines. The Victorian Railways DRC Class Rail Cars were built same time and design as the 1200 Class.

The 1100 class was used on day services between Sydney and Goulburn and on the South Coast Daylight Express between Sydney and Nowra on the South Coast line.

If you want more info on these two sets and other NSW Rail Motors .. visit the N.S.W. RAIL MOTORS CLASS INDEX at http://www.railmotorsociety.org.au/rm_class_frame.htm

Doing some minor changes to the Freight Wagons as notices some now connecting properly as I have the lengths wrong in some.
Wagon Length.png
Wagon Length.png (49.47 KiB) Viewed 3230 times
I done most of the 4-wheeled wagons. As can see in pic there is a nice gap between the wagons.

Yet to start the bogie wagons and as can see in pic the cattle wagons are all touching and looks like one long wagon.

Coalroads_Artist gave me lots of Freight Wagons sprites back in late 2015 and I haven't used them all yet .. so hope to add more of his great work.

The coding for my train sets are from 2cc Trains In NML. The 4 wheeled had cargo capacity for open wagons as 18 tons, however 4-wheeled wagons in Australia in the 1800s in real only carried 6 to 8 tons. Boxcars carried 20 tons in 2cc but in real (known as Louvred Vans) they only carried 8 tons. So I be changing the wagons in my sets to carry the actual amount they did in real. This should put a bigger challenge to game too as need more wagons to carry cargos.

To carry 100 tons in 4-wheeled Boxcars only need 5 wagons, but with my 4-wheeled Louvred Vans need at least a dozen wagons to carry same amount.

Anyone out there more knowledgeable with sprite sizes for Wagons?

I found the sprites for Sizes 6 and higher .. but none for smaller sizes.

On this sprite I did what I think is right for sizes 4 and 5. Can someone confirm if right or wrong?

Still playing around with the graphics with the wagons in the 2 train sets.

Been a bit slower then intended as been caught up on other things past few days.

Added a bit of colour variety to Gen5.
The Louvred vans have a new set of Bogies .. Livestock wagons still have original at the moment.

Gen3 Wagons3.png (9.8 KiB) Viewed 3126 times
The Louvred Vans been shortened by 1 pixel for North-South directions so can see gap between wagons.
The Livestock Wagons haven't been changed yet and as can see looks like one long continues wagons with no gaps.

Funny part about the colours .. I took the blue colours from Coalroads_Artsist Open Wagons .. the colours look a bit bright on the louvred vans yet they looked good on the open wagons.

Looking really nice, them trains, GarryG.

As for sizes and stuff, maybe 'debugvehicles' is what you are looking for.
It's a set by Frosch, aimed for debugging and aligning your own vehicles, including trains.
It also has very boxy graphics to denote where a vehicle is supposed to be, which looks like you can use them as a template.

http://dev.openttdcoop.org/projects/debugveh (-> repository -> src -> gfx -> boxvehicles -> view )
Set is also at bananas, if you want the grf.

For trains, afaik anything beyond 8/8 may glitch beyond belief.
Being a retired OpenTTD developer does not mean I know what I am doing.

Thanks pal .. shall have a look and see if these help.

The difference I find is .. the sprites I borrowed from 2cc Trains in NML .. for trains travelling north-south directions these are 8 pixels wide where those Frosch are 11 pixels wide.

But not width that the concern it just the length of the North-South direction sizes.

Been experimenting and I think I worked it out.
Alberth wrote:Looking really nice, them trains, GarryG.
Applicate your comments.
Alberth wrote:For trains, afaik anything beyond 8/8 may glitch beyond belief.
I doubt that I be trying vehicle longer then 8/8.

Using the five Gen types that 2cc Trains in NML use.

Gen1 I be making 4/8 and 5/8. Gen2 will be 5/8, Gen3 6/8, Gen4 7/8 and a few 8/8, Gen 5 be 8/8.

After I get the sizes right and looking good .. like to do away with the Gen types and do same as I did for the Passenger Coaches. Give them the codes the wagons represent. Where in 2cc, the Boxcars represent Livestock, Reefers, standard and a few others, like to split these up into their individual types so can get the tare and capacity more accurate.

Its a slow process but interesting work.

Doing the objects sets gave me lot of experience in graphics so should be able to make all the trains a wee bit better.

Cheers

Re: Australian AuzTrains and NSWTrains

Some of the changes I am making in the train sets.

Changes cargo to some wagons such as:
Manufacturing Supplies and Engineering Supplies can be carried by Open Wagons/Gondolas and Louvred Vans/Box Cars.
Coal, Iron Ore, Sand, Gravel and other minerals and raw material when hopper wagons become available, these cargos will only be carried by the hopper wagons and not also by Open Wagons.
Same idea applies to Grain, Wheats, Maize, Sugar, etc when Silo Wagons become available these cargos will only be carried by the Silo Wagons and no longer be carried by Open Wagons.
Adding more work done by Coalroads_artist.

I noticed a few cargo errors in last release .. I did not have FUEL. And MEAT could be carried in louvred van .. think it might get a bit smelly if it a long journey so I changed it so can only be carried by Reefers and refrigerated transport.

I plan to rename Reefers to Refrigerated Vans as that is what they called in my country.

Still working on Gen 5 wagons .. Hoppers and Silos to still to do. Haven't started Gen 4 yet and need to recheck Gen 1 and Gen 2.

Still working on changes to the Trainsets.

Seperated the Livestock and Reefers from the Louvred Vans in Gen 4 and Gen 5 Wagons. (Will do same for Gen 1, 2 and 3 eventually)
Renaming Reefers to Regrigerator Vans. (Done Gen 4 and 5 so far)
I think I finished all the graphics changes to Gen 5.
Only done Refrigerator Vans and Livestock Vans for Gen 4 so far.
Gen 1, 2 and 3 done a lot of graphics works here, but still need to fix the sprite sizes for Gen 1 and Gen 2 for trains travelling North-South directions .. I have the sprites sizes I need, just haven't had chance to change things.

Removed the Livestock Vans from Gen4 Type2 as not needed.

The reason I separating the Livestock Vans and Refrigerator Vans from the Louvred Vans in the Tare and Capacity.

For instance with Gen 5 .. In 2cct Trains in NML the Type 1 van had cargo capacity at 63 tons .. this might be correct for another country but not Australia. The louvred Vans here carry only 45 tons, Refrigerator Vans carry 44 tons and livestock wagons carry a massive 14 tons .. yes only 14 tons. (Sheep Vans only carry 200 sheep or Pigs and Cattle Wagons carry 20 cattle or horse). Maybe our animals here not as heavy as what in other countries :) )

FOOD, FRUT (Fruit), BEER( Liquid Merchandise) and FRVG (Processed Foods) can be carted by both Louvred and Refrigerated Vans as not all need to be kept cool.

Anyway if like to try what I done to date here Version 8 of both sets. I've only had chance to test wagons when they are empty.

Trying an idea of mixed trains .. when you selected the louvred vans it may randomly provide a open wagon that can carry the same cargo.
Gen 5 Wagons.png
Gen 5 Wagons.png (13.61 KiB) Viewed 3022 times
Top train has Gen 5 Type 1 Louvred Vans and it has randomly added 4 open wagons covered with tarpaulins.
Middle train has Gen 5 Type 2 Louvred Vans and it has randomly added 2 open wagons with tarpaulins. The 4 wagons behind the engines are refrigerator vans.
Bottom train is Gen 5 container train .. last 4 have refrigerator containers.

I got no idea when I be doing other States trains as the NSW ones are keeping me busy and still a lot to do.

EDITED:

Changed my mind (which I seem to do often) .. instead of the random wagons types .. so if you want a unit train with all louvred vans allow this to be. Instead I make some Mixed Wagons for those who like there train to have a mixture of wagons types.

Progressing slowly with the updated train sets.

Been adding some Brake Vans (Service Vans).

The are from left to right:
KHG, JHG, MHG, PHG, FHG, LHG, SHG, BHG, CHG and BH.

HG, BHG, PHG , KHG Brake Vans new ones added (Service Vans)
Service_Car_Type1 and Type2 removed.
Added Mixed Wagons randomly selects between Open Wagons, Louvred, Flat Wagons and Container Wagons that all carry same cargo. Only did Gen 5 so far to see if worth doing it to other Hens or removing it.

Changed random switch to give greater variety of wagons randomly used.

Added separate Coal Hoppers to Gen 4 & 5. Removed them from the Hopper Selections.

Separated the Livestock and Reefers from the Louvred Vans in Gen 4 and Gen 5 Wagons. (Will do same for Gen 1, 2 and 3 eventually)
Renaming Reefers to Refrigerator Vans.

Progressing slowly on the train set upgrade.

Done the Gen 1 and Gen 5 wagons .. been doing some work to the other sets but they not completed yet.

In Gen 1 separated the Livestock and Refrigerator Vans (known as Meat Vans in the 1800s).

Hoppers replaced by Open Wagons in Gen 1 as hoppers where not available till some time I between 1890 and before 1902.

If you like to play around with what I done so fare here a copy of version 9 of both train sets.
