Can't you do something like this with ships:

1 ship from, let say, 1920 to 1940

next ship from 1940 to 1960 using same ID

next ship from 1960 to ... using same ID

Can't that be done?

Yes, there's a ship very much like this one on Lake Winnipesaukee here in New Hampshire.

Not if you want different statistics, capacity etc., which rather ruins the point...

Do you ever use boats for anything? I mean, it's quite a waste, like carrying people around the same town when they want (Oh, i tell you, they want), to go all around the map in a 400mph maglev to the farthest possible town.

I say qe should include a Destroyer to patrol the coast for Russians, well, or americans... That gave me an idea, haha

What do I use ships for? Well, I'm planning to use them on my Great Lakes map for one, but a ship carrying 190 Tons of Iron ore from Duluth to Gary doesn't cut it.

Basically, I want North American style ships that will haul 300-400 Tons in a single shot. I've always wanted to run a Great Lakes Shipping Empire

Well, playing tycoon you realise making money is the least important thing (i mean, you have so much it doesn't matter) I once just used hovers, but actually i do use some ferrys and tankers.

Of course making money is the least important thing. I like shipping sims, but have yet to see one of the Great Lakes. TTD is about the closest I'm going to get for awhile, so I may as well make some Lakers.

Actually, making money with the US set is much more challenging, because the operating costs are so astronomical. And in certain situations, you have no choice but to operate a service at a loss for other strategic reasons, for instance hauling food up to a mountain-top city (very expensive if you have freighttrains 5 as recommended) but you have to do it to grow the city to the point where it'll accept goods, which pays better.

I'm afraid the way in which i use tycoon is as a way to replace the expensive real electric trains...

However, about ships, i feel like just Tankers are necessary (of the big beast), who would want to carry livestock around in a boat?. So lakers are the most suitable option, and also the most eye candy one.

Definitely Agree with the livestock comment, that's why my ships would carry very limited cargoes :). Lake boats carry Grain, coal and Iron ore, that'd be it. Maybe wood and a specific Tanker for oil.

I realise this isn't America, but how do you think livestock gets to/from the Orkney isles? They don't shove them in a plane!

Been working on this along with the Canadian set and the USSet. Here's a broadside of the first passenger ship. It's planned to carry 120 passengers and be available in 1920. It's based on the liners the Canadian Pacific used to have plying the Great Lakes.

It fits well in the TTD world, I think. But, isn't it floating a little too high?

Decided to continue this topic and include my fishing boats in the list. This ship set won't be useable with Tropic and will only be in Arctic and Temperate. (Except maybe the Fishing boats and passenger ships).

Current ship list for this set

Coastal Fishing Boat - 1920 - Arctic, Tropic, Temperate - Fish/food
Passenger Liner - 1920 - Arctic, Tropic, Temperate - Passengers
"600 footer" bulk freighter - 1920 - Arctic, Temperate - Coal, Wheat, Iron Ore, lumber, goods(maybe)
Tanker - 1920 - Arctic, Temperate - Oil
Factory Trawler - 1970 - Arctic, Tropic, Temperate - Fish/food
Great Lakes Bulk Freighter - 1950 - Arctic, Temperate - Coal, Wheat, Iron Ore
Great Lakes "Super Laker" - 1970 - Arctic, Temperate - Coal, Wheat, Iron Ore

A few more will be added as well.

Great! Excellent! You sure you're not part Mar'timer?
Can't wait to put a couple of these in the Bay of Fundy. We'll see if they're up to handling the highest tides in the world. 8)
Too bad the slots are so limited ... a tug boat would be just the eye candy to go with the snow plow
Don't be naming any of those lakers Edmund Fitzgerald.
