Re: Useless Tracks
This almost dropped to the bottom of the page
Anyways, I've thown a little noise over it to have it blend more with the terrain and look a bit more "disused". How's this?

Re: Useless Tracks
If you're going for a disused look, maybe fade the edges of the track/road just a little bit more? Right now I think they look a little too sharp in some areas (particularly the grass). Otherwise it looks good, almost makes me want to draw something

FWIW I agree
Re: Useless Tracks
Yeah, me too. This was just a quick gaussian noise thrown over it to see if I'm moving in the right direction. Such a noise doesn't account for edges, that needs manual work
Bridges are a bit tricky, as replacing a bridge will replace it for all railtypes. The alternative would be a defunct bridge in the form of objects, but those have the disadvantage of not allowing roads and rails to be built under them. I guess I could do some defunct bridge foundations. Then you don't have the overhead bits to worry about and can place the foundations where there is space. And maybe some fake tunnel entrances too, so that you can build a real tunnel in the opposite direction at the same height.

Re: Useless Tracks
You can have a bridge overlap a road with objects, look at the ISR harbours.
Also only the ramps would be nice.

Re: Useless Tracks
Well yes, but then you get an enormous amount of different combinations, spanning one tile, two tiles, three tiles, four tiles, etc. At height level 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. That's a bit too much for my liking. But I think just abutments and pillar foundations will work great too, or at least it looks good in my head
Re: Useless Tracks
I agree with Foobar and think that those kinds of graphics will be enough for this railtype. However one could still make stationtiles or maybe even better waypoints with those "broken down" graphics on them, so that vehicles could be able to drive under the old bridge.

Re: Useless Tracks
So, how's this. Better not? I've included the previous two incarnations for reference.

Re: Useless Tracks
Its *much* better. Could you add a certain amount of colour noise to the brown? ie make it look less uniformly brown
Re: Useless Tracks
Thanks. I'm unsure about the brown noise though, I thought I already had quite a lot of that!

Re: Useless Tracks
How's this for a bridge foundation?
It needs some dirt around the bottom to prevent the hovering effect, but other than that?

Re: Useless Tracks
It's nice and could be fun to have bridges which actually use such foundations... but that needs OpenTTD code changes (tracks or roads can go anywhere below a bridge).FooBar wrote:How's this for a bridge foundation?

These pillars are actually unlike all the normal bridge foundations. You could simply use the sprites from the bridge pillars. Either copy and add some "age" around them or even reference (tricky).

Re: Useless Tracks
I really like both ideas but the second one would really help in multiplayer games when showing someone example track. Is this available to download yet and can you place track over the top?
The cruelest dream is reality.
Re: Useless Tracks
Going back to the disused tracks: why not removing the fences from all the tiles (not just the desert ones)?
The French Narrow Gauge Train Set is now released! Get it here
Re: Useless Tracks
OpenTTD just doesn't put fences in the desert for some reason, so it's not from the GRF. Besides, I think it makes sense to keep fences around the tracks even if they're 'gone', since you still own the right-of-way.
It's looking good so far, by the way
