How should Fraenklie's buildings be used? [see Page 7 discussion]

Yes, use them in large towns and use the TARS buildings in the villages

Btw, hint now that I look over the house sprites: make the ground tiles separate sprites. Each house tile will need probably its own ground sprite which will completely show when buildings are set to transparent. Personally I like very much TTD's way to show the place the building should be as black area so that the outline of different buildings is still nicely visible.

Technically that's easily achieved, if you draw in layers. That way you see still the result as it should be when composed, but you can export each layer separately and saving the need to then spend much time on cutting sprites.

Thanks, pm.

This is something like the new scale, taken from this type of thing.

Thoughts?

Thanks guys. I am at a loss at how to draw planked wood walls, but then add noise to them? Any tips?

If the planks are small, don't draw them, just draw noise. If they're large, don't draw noise, draw a pattern of highlights. This industry shows both - on the small and large sheds.

The best thing is to look at the original TTD industries for inspiration (the new extra-zoom feature in nightly ottd is very useful for that).

I tried something. Summer one is boring, needs more detail. Winter one is satisfactory.

Graphics look quite tasty. For the summer version, maybe make a small railing around the flat roof and place a few flower pots or a table and benches.

I'll give that a crack :)

l thought about adding garden furniture up there, but then asked the question 'How to people get out there? Jump off the balcony?' :)

Through a (missing) door from the building?

Some quick tweaks, this was about 2 mins, really needs 30 mins :P

- the rear part of the roof was shaded wrong, it should be darker than the front part (sun is at about 5 o'clock)
- added some noise to the roof (a few single pixels in nearby colour)
- added a lip at the edge of the flat roof (1 px row of highlight, then 1px row of shadow)
- added some noise to grey walls (single pixels)
- added dividers to the front windows to make them less uniform
- started adding some shadow under the pitched roof. It's a big overhang, it should cast a lot of shadow.

Thanks Andy, great help as always. I think I am slightly improving at adding noise/shading. I have decided to ignore the snow covered versions for a bit, to concentrate on getting the building right before worrying about snow. Here are three WIPs, one thanks to Andy.

1) These are still far too big to be 1x2, but I mainly wanted some ideas on how the roofs are, now I have added some noise. For the final set, I would prefer 1x2 buildings to be reserved for large structures, such as this (which I have tried drawing, but is proving difficult!)

2) A new restaurant-type building. I know it has no shading/noise, I haven't got that far yet. For the life of me, I just CANNOT draw a table + chairs to go outside it.

3) The sprite Andy looked at. I may add some dark yellow around the shop name to highlight that more.

The scale still seems far too big. I feel like I should be aiming for 2 shops per 1x1 square, to enkeep with TT style. Thoughts?

I am now massively confused about where the light comes from in this game. I always thought it was top right, but now I just don't know!

The majority of original TTD sprites are lit from between 4 and 5.30 on the clock, with the sun high up.

Here's the first set of buildings for the town set, complete with snow transitions, and building stages.
