ade's steelmill 32bpp

original post--------------

hey guys and gals.
some of you may recognize my name, i made that grf-editor program, WinGRF, about 4 years ago. anyway - the reason i'm writing now is because I have another small contribution for the OpenTTD project.

so i'm taking this summer course in Blender, and it's coming to its end. the last assignment was free to do whatever you wanted, so I decided to make a new model of the steel mill in ttd. I've started modeling it after the original steel mill layout (a 2x2 tile and a 2x1 tile) and tried to keep it as similar as possible.

i'm pretty early in the process, i've worked a few days on it, i'm hoping to make it much better looking than this, but here's a preview of the 2v2 tile.
Image

so the reason i'm posting here is to get some input and some tips, so this can be made ready for use. I'm not a regular in the openttd scene, so I need some help =)

pls note, the ground texture is just a rough temporary thing i made in 2 mins. also, there's A LOT more details i want to add to this, since it doesn't look very dense atm.

btw, the model and its elements will be released under a creative commons license, and textures have been taken from such sources (or are original art) so there won't be any IP issues.

i've got 2 weeks before the project needs to be done, so i'll be updating here A LOT until then. in 2 weeks, I want to have everything finished, including

* complete models of the 2x2 and 2x1 tiles
* "company"/variation colors
* extra zoom levels renditions
* PNGs encoded
* 8bpp version
* demo video (for school...)

i'm continuing on this tomorrow, please post if u have any thoughts.

so the first thing I want to ask is, how do you guys interpret the 2x2 original tile? the small pixelated image allows for some imagination..

I need some ideas for details to add.

Is very good. :D ¿Do you have a transparent version in PNG format?
I can cut it into tiles and create a TAR file.

Is it animated like original?
Also as you already said I think it should be a bit bigger (not in scale) to cover more ground. Much space is empty. Now this is not bad necessarily, you could add some produced stuff there, like pipes, etc.

I don't think the platform the factory is standing on should be that high.

You can get some inspiration here.

I's pretty similar to the original, which makes it unrealistic at the same time.
For example, where are the chimneys' bases? Are they fixed in the roof? ;D

Anyway, I like the looks of it. Good work.

Why does it ALWAYS have to be REALISTIC???
I find it very good myself.
The idea was to make it look as close as possible to the original one. That goal has been reached, as far as I am concern.
If you are not ready to work a bit for your ideas, it means they don't count much for you.
OpenTTD and Realism? Well... Here are a few thoughs on the matter.

I like it as well. I don't think it would be better, if aDe created hyperreallistic modern steel mill. I just think, that what wasn't really visible in original version, look somewhat strange in this take. In normal zoom levels no one would probably notice (as I've never noticed, that chimneys look weird in original). However, in close up it's just... weird... :D

here's an update... gonna put a little cart with steel wire rolls up front by the little house, and some more lightning to make the molten steel glow on nearby objects

It will be a TAR file.
I can help with it, but is better with a trasparent PNG file than cutting a not transparent JPEG file.

Looks good, and will go well with my other 32bpp graphics, and I hope for more, as a combo between 32 and 8 bpp looks odd, does it not?

I don't know, I'm new here. The 190+ page blender thread contains A LOT of stuff, search the forum and the wiki I'd say...

last update for today.. think it's mostly done now, some small adjustments left...

I'll probably start with the other tile tomorrow

Hello

It looks fine, but -IMHO- your settings for lights and shadows are a bit wrong. The shining from the liquid steel on to the gable of the first "big" house seems to bright and it looks that the light source is in front of it because there is no shadow of the next roof on the gable. Not for the light from the liquid steel and not from the "sun".

I made a mockup to show what I mean:

I hope it helps.
