Signal boxes don't actually always have signals outside them. And I think they'd look appropriate if placed as waypoint stations, because you space waypoints out down the length of the track, just like signal boxes.

signal Boxes are laced in an appropraite place for controlling signals, say there are eighteen signals around a busy junction, then the signal box would be in the middle of all the signals, where it is most accesible.
These days they also host CB radio trnsmitters and buttons for electric lights, which is leading to the closing of signal boxes, becuase they are no longer need becuase all the sgnals can be contolled from the nearest Rail station
