Yet Another Road and Rail Set (version 0.2.1 - 26/02/09)

[details to go here]

- Original post -
I'm not feeling very creative right now so I can't think of a suitable name for this grf. The roads/rails aren't really specific to any region but "generic road and rails" sounds rather boring. Any suggestions?

I have only done the temperate tiles and default bridges so far but you can select which bits you want with parameters.

Parameters:
First: 0 (default) = new road and rails; 1 = new road only; 2 = new rails only
Second: 0 (default) = no road junction markings; 1 = road markings

Current version: 0.2.1 (26/02/09)

Changelog:
  • 0.1 - initial release (temperate only)
  • 0.2 - added arctic and tropic climates
  • 0.2.1 - bugfix and minor visual improvements
Still left to do:
  • Toyland (possibly)
  • Support other road/rail/whatever sets
  • Tidy up the code (probably)

1. No-Name Road/Rail Set
2. Generic Road/Rail Set
3. buttercup's Road/Rail Set
4. Yet Another Road/Rail Set.

My choice is #3

Hm, I think 4 myself.
I like the rails, would be nice to have them at least compatible with other roadsets... but that's just a little personal wish, I might use it to teach myself a little about nfo coding at some point.

Nice set.
My only negative comment is about the white lines on the roads. Can I suggest 2 tones darker and some smoothing?

Top area is original
Yellow area is darker
Orange area is more smooth.

- And dark slopes should have +1 tone darker lines (opposite for sunlighted ones).

My thoughts exactly. I think they were part of a .grf that removed gridlines. Tempenh.grf or something like that.

Compatibility with other roadsets is planned (not sure for when though)

DJ Nekkid wrote:btw, adding support to opengfx? (grass/snow etc underneeth the tiles)
It does indeed support OpenGFX terrain (temperate only at the moment)

The problem I found with tempenh.grf (as nice as it was) was that the bridges, tunnels, and level crossings were left untouched. Rather than adapting someone else's work I thought it would make more sense to start again. So while to two are similar, I assure you the railway tiles were drawn from scratch.

athanasios, thank you for the suggestion. I have darkened the white lines and it does look better now.

For the name, I think YARRS is probably the most suitable, given its nature.

I prefer names like buttercup's Road/Rail Set.

Also, the rails and roads are very nice.

Very nice work :D

Not sure if I'd use it myself, but still, very nice!

I like that name and YARRS as well as buttercups' RRS

It is with some hesitation that I release the initial version of YARRS (available in the second post*).

It would have been sooner but I thought that it might be better if the first version let you choose whether to use new roads only/new rails only/both.

As I mentioned previously, this doesn't yet support other road/rail/bridge sets, and is only available in temperate. This will change in future releases.

*I'm still not quite sure why I reserved the second post. It seemed like a good idea at the time...

Ooh, I like these! I'll be sure to use them in my next Europe game.

I checked out the grf in game and found the rails much to my liking. I always thought the default rails had a ballast that was a bit too dark with no real definition of the ties. The CS Rail Set had a ballast that was much too light although it does have the best catenary. The ballast and ties in this set are just right. The roads in this grf are good but just not to my taste. Fortunately with the parameters properly set I can have what I consider to be the best of everything.

Thank you very much for your efforts and please keep up the great work.

I do think that the rails are more realistic - the roads, for me too, are a bit "European" (especially the crossings), but it still looks really good.

Really impressed - and thanks for the parameter to just use the rails!

Really, really nice work!

Let it be known that I wholly approve of any set called 'YARRS', also, the graphics are awesome. I always loved the rails in tempenhw.grf, but couldn't stand the gridless tiles and overly noisey overlays used to blend the tiles together.

This is quality ace :).

Looking forward to compatibility with other road/rail/bridge sets, but hey, this is going straight into my games as-is, I'm hardly going to complain :).

Five minutes with these rails and I'm hooked. The original rail looks awful, I won't ever use it again. :-)

Now I just need to get rid of the fences...
