My Ideas

Render the planes to 32bmp Graphics

Plane Suggestions

Airbus A320neo 2015 generational upgrade improved range

Airbus A350

Boeing 737MAX 2017 generational upgrade 189 passenger improved range

Boeing 757

Boeing 787

TU-144

TU-204

Is there easy way replace older generational to newer generational aircraft than replaceing to another aircraft then replace again to new generational aircraft since new gerntrational comeout

first of all: great work, thanks a lot - its a must when i play OTTD!

second:
some ideas on *generational upgrades*
Fokker 100: before the Fokker 100 there was the F28 and later the F70, both lower capacity though
A320/B737: maybe including the new generation of planes coming up? (A320neo/B737Max)
A300: making a distinction between -B4 and -600 models, with different range
B707: -120 and -320 distinction with different capacities (similar to the DC8-30/60 distinction)
B727: including the 150-seat 727-200 Advanced as an update somewhere in the late 60ies/early 70ies
B747: SP version could be interesting since there is a new range feature (exceptional range, less pax)
B767: upgrade to include the -400 version with higher capacity maybe?
B777: a bigger version maybe? a -300? or the LR model? also for the A340 there could be some differentiation possible
Bae 146/Avro: maybe possible to make two planes out of it with lower operational costs
ATR72: maybe have a 42 version ahead of it?
Dash 8: a generational upgrade with the Q-series?

some ideas on *additional planes*
40/50ies:
Sud-Est Languedoc (long range, low passengers)
Sud-Est Armagnac (a bit like the britannia)
Breguet Sahara (a really nice double decker)
Vickers Vanguard (medium range, big plane)
Convair 240/340/440 (small piston planes, similar in size to the viscounts)
F27 + generational upgrade to F50 (yes, similiar to the viscount, i know)
60ies:
B720 (a derivate of the 707 with shorter range and lower costs)
Vickers VC10 (long range, less passengers than the 707; (it looks similar to the 62, so maybe less work))
Hawker Siddeley Trident (like the 727 a bit; resembles it optically quite well, especially the 721 model)
70/80ies:
B757 (really useful as a longer range model compared to the 727/737)
Lockheed 1011 Tristar (looks like the DC10, just with the much cooler ducted rear engine)
DHC-7 (useful in the future with STOL characteristics)
Saab 340 & later the 2000
BAe ATP
90ies:
Canadairjet CRJ200 & later the versions up to 900
B717/MD90 (as a replacement for the DC9 or as an upgrade)
2000+:
Bombardier CSeries
Embraer E190
A350/B787: can be useful because of the expiring of airplanes, so that there is a replacement available

and of course all the russian planes, the most interesting of which are in my opinion:
TU-104, 114, 134, 144, 154, 204/214
Yak-42, SU-80, Superjet, IL-86/96, 114, AN-74, 148/158
and the future Irkut MS-21 and COMAC C919

oh... well, thats now a very long list. but glad about anything at all :)

third: changes to the system
my idea is that range should be penalized in aircrafts by raising the price accordingly or the running costs, so to prevent people to use the long-range airplanes so much. and it could be interesting if there could be a refitting of airplanes in different sizes (like the B737 Classic could be available as the 300, 400 and 500 etc.). but really, i have no clue about programming or coding and all that stuff, so i assume it must be a really big ammount of work and probably not worth the effort.

I can build the S.26 Empire no problem. Do you have the Parameter set that allows you to use the Seaplanes?

There is a parameter, but as far as I know its still in the works so things aren't refined yet, but still playable

I just recently downloaded Av8 and tried it out, but I got an error message when I loaded a new game with the NewGRF.

"A fatal NewGRF error has occurred: the av8 aircraft set must be loaded before this grf"

I get this message, even when there are no other NewGRFs active. I have the latest version of OpenTTD, along with (I hope) the latest version of Av8, from BaNaNaS. I don't know if BaNaNaS has the latest version of this NewGRF or not.

Help, please? I just found out about NewGRFs, literally, and have no clue what could cause this.

The error message hints quite strongly onto you using more NewGRFs than just av8. Please post a list (screenshot?) of all newgrfs you try to use in that particular game which shows also the order of NewGRFs.

I've tried all different combinations of all the NewGRFs that I currently have. They all result in that error. Here is a screenshot of the list, showing only the Av8 NewGRF set as active (link). It still leads to the error.

Ah, that clears it. You try to only load the (obsolete) add-on NewGRF to av8.

Please load the newest av8 which is like 2.0 or so; IIRC it includes the planes from this add-on to old av8 versions as well. It's also available on bananas.

@Pikka: Provided that this add-on is really obsolete it might be an idea to edit the bananas entry of this add-on so that it won't be available for separate download, unless needed by a particular savegame. Just set the max OpenTTD version to like 1.0 or so.

Thank you. That did the trick. Bananas really needs to remove older versions of NewGRFs... It would prevent a lot of confusion.

Thanks again!

As only the author of a NewGRF can reliably decide whether it's obsolete or not. They do have the possibility to do so. It's another question whether it's always used ;-) Also whether something is "obsolete" is a point one can disagree on easily ;-) (one man's noise is the other man's data)

Bunch of suggestions, no hurry :p
  • C-Series
  • Sukhoi SuperJet 100
  • Tupolev Tu-334
  • Variants for the current jet aircraft (explained below)
For the variants, I was thinking instead of the generational upgrades, you could build seperate variants, such as the 737-100/-200, then -300, -400 and -500, then -600, -700, -800 and -900ER (longer range than other 737NGs). This gives players more freedom to choose between range and payload. For example you might have a route that is too long to be served adequately by a 737, but if you use a 767, you'll lose money due to increased running costs. Variants give players choice to sacrifice range for payload, and vice versa. Give me a little bit of tutoring and I'll be happy to help lolol

Here's a bunch of variants, I guess the changes can be applied simply by shortening/lengthening the current sprites, and changing some files, I dunno XD
  • 737-100/-200[1968-1983]
  • 737-300, -400 and -500 - Replaces -200 and adds capacity + range whilst decreasing running costs [1983-2000]
  • 737-600, -700, -800 and -900ER - Replaces the -300, -400 and -500, whilst again decreasing running costs and adding capacity and range. -900ER has more range than the rest, lets say 800 vs 725 tiles or something like that. [1995-2020]
  • 737 MAX 7, 8 and 9 - Replaces the -700, -800 and -900ER, adds range and decreases running costs. [2017-2040]
  • Sukhoi SuperJet 100 - 90 seater regional jet [2011-2035]
  • Tupolev Tu-334 - Short lived regional jet, 100 seater [1999-2010]
  • Airbus A350-800, -900 and -1000 - 300, 340 and 380 seater long range jets [2018-2048]
  • Embraer E-Jets - 80, 100 and 120 seater medium range jets [2004-2030]
They are just some of my ideas, there could probably be variants for the 707, 777, 767 etc, but I'm probably about to reach my character limit :p

Query. I have been playing through my current game, using (among other things!) FIRS, av8 and the ECS&FIRS vehicle sets. I have found that the latter have vastly lower running costs than the av8 planes (especially as I started in 1835 with inflation on...!) It's been difficult to run any of the av8 stuff for very long if at all and make much of a profit (and I've not managed a even moderately sucessful cargo run yet.) (With the default road vehicles, I'm having the exact opposite issue with eGRVTS, that the basic vehicles are not competative!)

I am on a small map, granted, but given the aircraft have a maximum range, I don't think that it's just that I'm not putting long enough routes.

So, am I missing something here? I have the plane speed factor set to 1/4 (which I think is default)... Should it really be set higher or something, given the larger running costs of the av8 stuff compared to the basic aircraft? If not, what else can I be doing wrong? I set the aircraft to full load, and run into the hangars before they leave the airport, and use the largest airports I can to try to minimise traffic - and I am playing breakdowns on, if that makes a dispropotionately major difference.

The Av8 set is meant to be played with a plane speed factor of 1. It should give you a warning message if you start a game and the setting is not 1...

Riiight. *facepalm*

Yeah, I thought that might be it, upon later reflection... I imagine that makes all the difference (because presumably it means four times as much money per trip, yes?) Not quite sure why there was a plane speed factor to start with (presumably a facet of the original TT), and why I left at that...! I think maybe I assumed it was sort of making it too easy or something...

(I'm very good at unintentionally making my life hard! My trip through the current game has been...trying...but I'm determined to stick it to the bitter end now, especially with only a couple of decades to go.)

It may even have shown me that warning, but as I was coming into it all pretty cold (the last time I played OpenTTD was when it was 0.5, and before that was TT the dos version) so I wasn't really paying too much attention when I started, what with all the pretty new toys version 1.2.2 has to offer!

In fact, now you mention it, I distantly recall it might well have put up the warning, and I suspect, in my naiveity, I just thought, "yeah, t'll be alright!" and then forgot about it...!

Cheers.

Hello, Pikka!
Do you have parameter in your set which switch plane range off?
