To answer your caption's question, no. That's correct.

There are indeed 16 crossing sprites (2 for 4 directions for Rural and Urban - 2x4x2=16)

And that's for temperate only.

Oh it will, unless you include sprites that the activated crossing state uses.

If you look in trg1r or whatever the bugger is called, You'll see that there is a "barriers up" and "barriers down" state for each directional crossing, both rural and urban.

As Purno said, this differs in Arctic - There are double the number of sprites because of the snow factor.

In tropical: there are urban, rural and desert.

But arctic and tropic do use the same urban sprites as temperate, right?

And then there's toyland...

I seem to be having problems with this grf.

when the town has built a level crossing it seems to have worked, but when i build on i get the original sprites

any idea why this isnt working?

also if anyone can tell why my UK roatset isnt working i would like to know

dasy2k1,

It seems that you are building yours in the 'rural' area... and therefore the gates are only programmed to be in the towns.

A bug has been fixed in the newer nightlies, which restricts NewGRFs with certain bugs from being loaded. There's no problem with your system. You should see if there's a new version of that GRF available and/or if the author could fix the problem.

Ah i see,
the gated crossings are only on a paved road.. that makes some sense allthough all crossings were gated at one time...
open crossings are a relitivly new thing as they break the rule about the railway being totally fenced in

sorry for dreding this out of the past,

but im now having another problem when using the UK roadset with this GRF

is there any way to get the GRF to grab the road surface form another set to stop this happening

even better would be to grab the background then add yellow hatching across the whole crossing
