And what would be the purpose of this? Why not build the road / rails directly? I think you have to explain more detailed... ?(

I think he want something like a highway thats lower than the rest of the terrain. Something like

\__/

where / and \ are concrete walls that hold away earth, and __ is a road. its more of a graphic aproach then anything else.

If that's what he wanted, it's already possible. You have to turn on buildonslopes and then do what m3henry just suggested, thus creating vertical walls.

Simply digging a hole and placing road or rail at the bottom will NOT automatically include walls.
The walls have to be created in a third step by building something along the slope.
See the attached png image below for an example.

Matt Samyel: Unfortunately there is not a tool such as for canals, but by following the example in the image you can get the effect you are looking for.

I know the walls are not automatically built. But I didn't tell because I thought it would be implied by the context.
  • If you are on free land, there is no need to build such a canal (neither in reality nor in TTD).
  • If you want to build it through a city (for whatever reason), and lower the ground next to existing houses or roads, the walls will be created.
