Prevent trains from taking 90° curves

Post by mtwist »

I do not exactly know how the pathfinding algorithm works, but it would be a very nice feature if trains could be prevented from taking the unrealistic 90° curves. There could be a switch in the cfg-file.

Even if that was possible, I would guess that trains would get themselves stuck or lost due to one careless inclusion of a 90 degree bend...

...but if it's a switch that can be on or off then I wouldn't care...

It works in OpenTTD, although the feature does depend on NPF, which also means that trains can't get lost. It's surprising how quickly one gorws used to it - I don't even try to have trains run over 90° curves any more, and in fact sometimes rely on it to prevent trains using certain routes from certain directions.

There is only one downside. The AI still uses 90° curves, so the switch is only usefull when the AI is off.

So is it entirely not possible to implement the prohobition of 90° curves in TTD Patch? I know OpenTTD has it, but OpenTTD has sucky (or at least it did the last time I checked) PBS, which is the most important thing in my game. When it comes to trading PBS for 90° curves, I'll always keep the PBS :D

AFAIK OpenTTD has currently no PBS at all. Last versions with some PBS in them are quite old ....
If you need something, do it yourself or it will be never done.

My patches: Extra large maps (1048576 high, 1048576 wide) (FS#1059), Vehicle + Town + Industry console commands (FS#1060), few minor patches (FS#2820, FS#1521, FS#2837, FS#2843), AI debugging facility

Other: Very large ships NewGRF, Bilbo's multiplayer patch pack v5 (for OpenTTD 0.7.3)

If my understanding of the tricks used to enhance enhanced tunnels is correct, the same type of pathfinder games may be applicable for preventing 90° curves.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.
