Horsepower

At the beginning of the game, railroads need not necessarily be your first choice. It's far easier to start the game with horse and carts. The money thus saved can then be used for building up railroads.

Personally I don't like these tunnels, they look somehow ugly...

They don't look like tunnels, they look like sewer pipes. And shouldn't the end of the train in the tunnel be slanting down?

This is the price we pay for their choice of having a flat map. All terrain differences are visual tricks on a flat map. Those who played AOE might understand what I mean.

Yup, I have to agree with you Louie. I'd guess those things would do fine for a subway entrance maybe. One reason why they look weird here is that they are used in a really dumb spot. I mean why not just use a bridge to cross the tracks, especially since it's on a perfectly flat land. I'm sure they would look better if on a side of the hill.

EDIT: Which they won't since there aren't any hills, heh. That's a pity.

No, there are hills. Cliffs, more like. My understanding is that there are very steep mountains that you can't build on, but you can tunnel through to the other side. You can see a glimpse of that in some of the screenshots, although there aren't any with tunnels bored into them.

If they were going to do tunnels this way, they'd have done better to have the train track descend into a trench, and then when it was at the proper depth, go straight into a tunnel portal.

If you want to use electric locomotives, your track will of course have to be electrified. To this purpose, you will need to build overhead lines. Electric locos have quite a few advantages, so while the initial costs may seem rather high, they might prove to be a worth-while investment in the long run.

Apart from:
- Lack of 45-degree tracks
- Really ugly looking tunnels
- No terrain modification allowed
- Overly simple sinalling

Shipping
Image
So far, you have been shown ships only as separate vehicles. Now you have the opportunity to admire them in action. Their capacity in particular is quite impressive – after all, just one ship can take the load of a whole train.
