I think this would be a nice and useful extension to add:

Many posts I want to give a "like" or a "thumbs up" to express my agreement or appreciation without having to make a post explicitly saying so.

It is the social media interaction of choice, the thumbs up.

Personally, while I agree it has become an expected feature, could it perhaps inhibit replies?

If you want to go into more detail as to why you like or agree with the post, one most certainly can, or can even expand upon the post. But I also find that sometimes we get a lot of posts where the replies are just expressing a like or agreement. Offering the "thank you for posting this" keeps the clutter down, plus the OP gets instant gratification of seeing who appreciated their post.

I don't want to see it implemented as social ranking or karma. We've got Reddit for that. And I don't even want an OP to be able to see how many posts were appreciated or how much appreciation total for all posts. Just being able to see it on that one post should be enough.

I'll look into it - generally I'd prefer to keep extension usage to a minimum, but if enough folk think it would be beneficial, it could be added.

At times I wish to have that feature, too
