Cannot Access http://www.tt-forums.net [Solved, sort of]

Post by 2006TTD »

I don't know why, but since the 9th of December I just cannot visit this site directly by entering the link into the browser.
However, I can visit here using some other (proxy)sites such as anonymouse.
While it is fine when I surf other websites such as google.
I tried disabling the firewall but I still could not access this site.
What happened? Is the forum's problem, or did my ISP banned it?

(I hope it wasn't because I posted in the Nobel Peace Prize thread)

It works all fine here, thus must be somewhere between your computer and the tt-forums servers.

"Wikileaks" is known to be filtered. I don´t know about "Nobel Peace Prize", though.

He, Golden Shield, some more work!

A follow up:
I am using Chrome now and it seemed alright (there may be some delays).
What happened to Opera? Is there a compatibility issue?
Anyway, Opera 11 will be released soon and I will try that again later.

Last time I heard access problems with opera it was in relation to IPv4 and IPv6 issues.

Have you tried accessing tt-forums directly with its IP address (178.19.113.112)?

For the Opera problem, I guess reinstalling it will solve the problem, similar to what I encountered a year ago (yes, me again.)

Making matters worse, my home's network is down, and the ISP said there are some signal problems, and it hadn't resume for 4 hours (until now), so there must be a big problem. Anyway, I managed to remain connected through other networks.

Or, indeed, http://ipv4.tt-forums.net/, which is likely to be easier to remember!

I'm afraid I don't know why the forums shouldn't be working in Opera though. IPv6 might be an issue, in which case, Opera should be less broken.

Miraculously, after shutting down they resuming the protection from Kaspersky (what I am using) just now, the problems (seemed to )have been solved!
It could have been the firewall's problem.
I hope it'll be fine. I'll keep an eye on it.
Happy Christmas!

EDIT: OK, don't be so happy now, difficulty comes back - I now experience extremely long delays, say about 20 seconds.
What in the universe is happening? X(

It seemed to be the firewall's problem, but it was fine before, what should/what can I do?

Can you access http://ipv4.tt-forums.net/? Does that appear without long delays?

If so, it sounds like your browser is trying to access the IPv6 site first, and failing, before trying the IPv4 site. You can basically try to tell your browser to ignore IPv6 (I have no idea how you may do that with Opera), or actually get yourself an IPv6 tunnel and enjoy the full breadth of the Internet. ;)

I could not access that site, but I could access http://www.tt-forums.net
I found out that when I disable Kaspersky Internet Security, the problem is solved. Maybe the problem is from an definitions update that day (9 Dec).
Is there any way to fix it?

Well, after fiddling and testing with the exceptions menu on the application settings, I managed to put the forums' IP address into the exception list. Kaspersky will not scan the internet flow through this IP. And the problem is solved, but will there be a risk?

Well, in theory, somebody could upload something malicious in an attachment here, or link to an image containing some kind of exploit. Of course, if we do notice something like that, then we would remove it as soon as possible.

I'm not aware of this ever happening in the past 8 years, but never say never.

I've been having the same problem for like 2 months or more. The link http://ipv4.tt-forums.net/ Orudge posted seems to work better but after going into the Locomotion forums, it slows down again and it takes forever to load pages. I'm also using Opera, Version 11.10. I thought it was just an Opera issue but IE is having trouble as well. I don't have a virus program going, just ZoneAlarm so I have no idea what it could be. I have the auto log-in set and I can't get logged in when accessing the forums. I just get the forums without being logged in. I have the Locomotion section linked to log-in to.

It sounds like you have some kind of IPv6 misconfiguration or some kind of firewall or other program that is causing problems. I'm not really sure what you can do about it, I'm afraid. You could try adding the following to your HOSTS file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts):

78.46.235.130 tt-forums.net
78.46.235.130 www.tt-forums.net

I believe this should therefore bypass the DNS servers and hence not get the IPv6 address. Note that if the TT-Forums server IP should change (which may happen in the future), you will need to update that file.

Thanks Owen. I'll give it a try and post back if it helped or not. I highly doubt that it's ZoneAlarm because I haven't made any changes to it. It's probably something I installed then. I hate it when I install something and the thing wants to change my start page and install an IE toolbar and/or other useless crap. And some things I can't install without it installing some BS toolbar that I'll never use and have to disable it. It's time for a full reinstall again any ways. I usually do it 2 or 3 times a year and with Windows 7, I was able to keep a back-up of my installations to make the process quicker but I lost a 1tb external HD recently with all of them on it so now I have to start all over again. :( Oh well. I'll do it soon and post back to say if it's better or not. I'm betting it will be. Don't know when I'll do it though. Been real lazy lately.

Oops, I thought I posted about how this is working now. DOH!! I made a new reply so ppl can see that I posted back about how it worked. Please don't be angry for the double post.

After placing the addresses into Hosts file, accessing these forums work like they should now. The pages load fast and I don't have to re-log in every time now.

Thank you, Owen, for your help.
