Special Ranks

Post by CombatGold1 »

It would be good for everyone if they could know whos "managing" what like I'm doing the download locations, maybe you could have a few problem solvers, developers, and others you can think of. Maybe putting those ranks on the users doing them would help everyone else so they know who to contact directly if they need "specialist" help.
Thanks,
Adam Reece.

Yeah, that would be cool.
On a lot of forums, the rank is optional/choose-able.
There could be like "TTE contributor" (looks at mirror.....:))) and other stuff like that.

Part of visiting a forum is knowing who does what

Like the patchman announces new changes in one topic
Dinges, Marcel and Rob announce new graphics, because they are the only (recent) people who make them
Shadow announces new ships/vehicles by Michael
Problems with ttdalter are for Owen
Problems with the patchstarter are for shadow

I know all of this and usually direct people to them

All of these things came just like that
Why put names on them
Everyone can help with problems anyway

Besides some of us have already got names, like patch developper and graphics makers
Well, back to work, lot's of it in the near future

Well, back in the mists of time, when Observer wanted a "Logo Creator" rank, I was against it because I thought everybody would eventually want their own rank. I made Josef "TTD God #2" when the TTDPatch forum came along, basically because I felt like it. ;) But I don't really want to add any more custom ranks. TTDPatch Developers will stay, but I'm not adding any more, unless there are really good reasons for it.

Oh, and when did you last contribute anything to the download thread?
18/04/2003: Updated by Owen - Fixed a small BBCode issue.
05/04/2003: Updated by CombatGold1 - Tidying up this entire post, and taking my place of adding links again.
01/12/2002: Updated by Owen - added new links posted here, plus some posted on the TTDPatch mailing list
15/12/2002: Updated by Owen - new ship graphics links plus TTDAlter 4.0.9
26/01/2003: Updated by Marco - files on ferrovie.ch don't work because server's feeder crashed broking hard disks. Wow, my recents datas are lost...if the provider can't recove data from disks...
09/02/2003: Updated by spiff - GRF wizard
25/02/2003: Updated by Omni - TTD Graphics
02/03/2003: Updated by spiff - TTD Graphics by Andrex and others
08/03/2003: Updated by Owen - Added this site
11/04/2003: Added new TTDPatch mirrors
:?

EDIT: Combat, for various reasons (I noticed your "adverts" and the way you thought you "owned" the thread), I've edited your thread to point to a new download location thread, which any of the admins/mods can edit. If you have mirrors you'd like to add, reply to the thread.

I noticed, after I'd made the original post (he put his updates at the top of the changes, not the bottom, which was completely the wrong way round ).

Says who? If you're writing an essay, do you start writing, then go to the top to right the next paragraph, then go to the top to right the next one, and so on? I'll just have a look at my TTSGM change log:
12/05/2001 - Started reconstructing the Manager
../../2001 - ...
16/08/2001 - Released Saved Game Manager 2.0
29/09/2001 - Added new /GETINFO switch, currently disabled [2.1]
29/09/2001 - Thought of new feature - add a Compress Game item to the
shell context menu for TT games
30/09/2001 - Started work on CMA support
20/10/2001 - Used SHBrowseForFolder API instead of own Browse dialog
28/10/2001 - Allows unlimited plug-ins
28/10/2001 - Fixed bug in error handler that caused it to ignore what
you click, pretty much
28/10/2001 - Improved plug-in dialog (internal changes), improved
plug-in error handling, and tidied up a few plug-in
related menus.
28/10/2001 - Updated help file and added descriptions to the
ExtFunctions class.
28/10/2001 - If unable to connect to the Internet/SGM web site, the
Check for New Version displays a polite error, instead of
displaying the usual error dialog and complaining about open
files.
17/11/2001 - Disabled hook in MANSHELL.DLL, as it doesn't work
22/12/2001 - Made SGM remember last position and use that
22/12/2001 - Manager handles the lack of HTML Help nicely, instead of generating a
run-time error
13/01/2002 - Added Select All and Deselect All commands to Game menu. Updated version [2.2]
to 2.2
13/01/2002 - Added support to Setup program to detect TTSGM 2.0/2.1 and remove them.
13/01/2002 - Updated help file with registry path information.
11/02/2002 - Upgraded to VB6, added F1 help for menu items.
11/02/2002 - Added shell extension, command line /CMD:COMPRESS
17/02/2002 - Created version that uses vbAccelerator toolbars, etc - CURRENTLY INCOMPLETE!!!
03/03/2002 - Fixed GetClimate in MANDLL.DLL to work with TTDPatch morevehicles games
03/03/2002 - Added support for TTDPatch morevehicle games (TRPxx.SV1)
05/03/2002 - Can double-click on a game in Manager to get information (request from beta tester)
05/03/2002 - If unable to load plug-in and there is a Filename= entry in plug-in section,
Manager will call REGSVR32 to attempt to register it.
07/03/2002 - Added TTDPatch to Game Version detection routine (request from beta tester)
09/03/2002 - Added error checking to pretty much every function that didn't have any
12/03/2002 - Got version 2.2 ready for release
24/03/2002 - Added code to remove any SGMAN*.DSC files left behind in the TEMP dir [2.3]
19/04/2002 - Started work on TTDX Editor .sv1dta, .sv1hdr, etc, filetype support
03/11/2002 - Started work on using UltraToolbars instead of standard functions
13/12/2002 - Combined MANDLL.DLL and MANSHELL.DLL into MANDLL.DLL, and used MSVC instead of
BC45 and BCB [NEEDS DEBUGGING!]
24/12/2002 - Tried to implement VB routine for BrowseForFolder, using Microsoft Shell Library
29/12/2002 - Implemented GetPlayerVehicles routine
29/12/2002 - Fixed problem with compression routine - player 2 cash and loan was saved under Cash
and Loan instead of Cash2 and Loan2
29/12/2002 - Updated docs with CSG 2.1 information
03/01/2003 - Started implementing CGUnZipFiles support instead of OwenZIP
Oh look, it's going old-to-new. And TTDAlter:
Version 4.0 Beta
----------------

- Everything

Version 4.0.5 Beta
------------------

- Added support for bridges
- Added support for ship cargo, price, maintenance, refittable
- Fixed helicopter/airplane setting
- Enabled currency changing
- Added basic error checking to a couple of functions
- Added option to delete TTDLOAD[W].OVL if saved with a standard name
- Added train double-headed checkbox, but there seems to be something
wrong with the data read in - probably wrong EXE location
- Started work on SPRITES.TXT file with default sprites for vehicles

Version 4.0.6 Beta
------------------

- Added support for industries
- Added support for customisable vehicle names from VEHICLE.DAT (24/08/2002)
- Created VEHICLE.DAT files for each language version (eg, FRENCH.DAT) (24/08/2002)
- Started work on multi-language support for bridge names, etc (24/08/2002)
- TTDAlter.exe now compressed with UPX to save space (24/08/2002)

Version 4.0.7 Beta
------------------

- Fixed saving bug with non-English versions of TTD (14/10/2002)

Version 4.0.8 Beta
------------------

- Fixed saving bug *completely* with non-English versions of TTD (16/10/2002)

Version 4.0.9 Beta
------------------

- Added Disasters support (22/11/2002)
- Fixed makelist.exe VB output problems (22/11/2002)
- Added support for Oil Rig (Passengers) and Farm (Livestock) (22/11/2002)
- Fixed helicopter bug (I *think*) (22/11/2002)
- Saved general data to TDFs (23/11/2002)
- Fixed "Cancel was selected" errors with some file dialogs (07/12/2002)
- Implemented HTML Help support instead of WinHelp (07/12/2002)

Version 4.0.10 Beta
-------------------

- Updated disasters to go up to 2155 (TTDPatch 1.9.1 alpha 11.5 exp) (27/12/2002)
- Created Windows Installer package and added Windows Installer support for Help (30/12/2002)
- Added support for demo of Japanese Windows version of TTD. As you can't start
new games in the demo, this will only be of use if you copy a scenario and rename
it to TRTxx.SS0. (26/04/2003)
Oh look, the same. I realise these are both things by me, and things by other people may be different, but there is no set standard. The thing I was getting at is that we were going old to new, then you went and plonked your stuff at the top, completely confusing the system.

Note the difference between essay writing and maintaining software. The correct way of writing such documents is to put the information that is most likely wanted first. That way, people don't have to struggle to find the end of your document if they don't want it. For essay writing, the way of doing this is by a brief introduction to the topic (usually given in the title) in the first paragraph. In software and Web site changelogs, the correct method of notation is to include the most recent first. It's probably in the Oxford Guide to Style (the definitive writer's manual) somewhere that lists of updates should be in "reverse chronological order" (i.e. most recent first). I'm pretty sure it would also say that an essay and a list of updates are two very different styles of document. Trying to apply the same style to the two is very much like trying to assemble x86 opcodes on a SPARC processor, or applying techniques for automatic transmission to driving a manual (or vice versa).

Yes, I know that... Anyway, my point was originally that we were going from earliest to latest, and then Combat puts his stuff at the top, making it latest, earliest, latest, which makes no sense at all. End of discussion, OK? :P

well, he had the right idea, though he'd have done better to at least change the rest of the list to match it ;-)
