What systems would you be able to develop/test on?

Post by jfs »

As discussed in the meeting, I think it would be a good idea if people working on or just interested in the project would post a list of what computer systems they would be able to test any developed code on. It would also be good to know what systems they think they would be able to use for development.

Just list the specs you think are "interesting" about the system. Most important is CPU speed, amount of RAM, sound and graphics setup and the operating system. The rest shouldn't be that important, I believe.

I currently have two systems at home:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (nForce2 based motherboard)
512 MB RAM
Matrox G550 graphics, two monitors connected (different resolution on them)
Two soundcards (onboard and an SB Live)
Windows XP Pro SP1 (32 bit edition, of course)

AMD Duron 750 MHz (on an older VIA based board, I think)
256 MB RAM
Only accessed through text console (SSH or serial) or remote X display (can hardly display 320x240 video without tearing, but it seems OpenGL might work)
No sound system
Debian Linux Unstable (with custom kernel)

I also have an old Pentium 133, but I don't think that one's much use.
I might buy a Mac some time in the near future.

I'll buy a new pc soon, and I'll try to run both Windows XP and some Linux distro on it, so I could test on a fairly new coputer and two OS's. But will there soon be anything to test?

Ok, I have one laptop:

CPU: 1,33 GHz, 256 KB cache, Celeron (Under the hood it is a Pentium 3 Coppermine)
Memmory: 768 MB SDRAM
Videocard: Cyberblade XP from Trident Microsystems. (no hardware 3D support , at least without good Linux drivers)
Soundcard: No idea, but output works with the ALSA sound system. (Dont know about input.)
OS: Gentoo Linux (kernel: gentoo-dev 2.6.9).
I have a XP license, but I havn't it installed.

As my computer realy lacks a good grapics card with (good) official Linux drivers, I will probably need a new computer to keep up with the needs of TEmpire. Probably that system will be a 64bit system. WIth Linux (offcorce).

Quite amaising it did told about *some* of the supported flags (sse, mmx etc.), but not about the cache size. However, the flags are not realy nessesary for now I think.

It is a lot easier to get supported flags than cache size .

If it makes a difference, I have two Athlon XP-based systems, one at 1700+ running Fedora Core 3 with stock kernel and 256MB of DDR RAM, the other a 3000+ running Windows XP with SP2 applied and 1GB of DDR RAM, though currently it has a nasty habit of randomly cutting out or BSODing. I've also got a PII 233 running Windows 98. (At least, I think it's Windows 98 - so long since I powered it up ...)

Would there be use for storeing the data in a table, with diffrent columns for diferent kind of hardware and OS, including one colum nfor whos computer it is, where each line is one computer.

That would allow us to search for who have an Amd64, or who have <400 MHz etc. Would that be usable, or just waste of time?

25MB ram??? how do you manage to run XP on that. I have a friend that did run it on 64, but that was hell slow. But 25, you wouln't hardly be able to run Xorg on that. (without using the swap).

So I guess you forgot a digit, maybe you meant 256?

By the way your nick is quite close one of the devlopers nick (uzurpator). :D
