Eurovision Song Contest, 2019

Post by Redirect Left » 27 Feb 2019 20:45

With May fast approaching, its the time of year where Eurovision news comes in quite fast now.

This years competition runs from Tuesday 14th May, until Saturday 18th May. The semi-finals are on Tuesday & Thursday, the final as always, being the Saturday.
We will be seeing entries from 41 countries this year, hosted in Tel Aviv, Israel after Netta won last year with the song 'Toy'. The only usual suspects not taking part this year are Bulgaria & Ukraine, more on Ukraine on the next paragraph.

This years contest hasn't begun yet, and there's been a heap of articles about it. From the what we all knew would happen calls of boycott from several countries - all of which did not end up boycotting - due to Israels rocky relationship with Palestinians. To the slightly less expected withdrawal of Ukraine, after their chosen winner, Maruv, decided that the contract did not work to their favour as one requirement was for her to not perform in Russia, which was against as her personal mission was to bring peace through gigs. So she was dropped by the network, UA:PBC. They instead went to the runners-up of the competition that led to Maruv winning, and they all chose to also deny the contract, leading to UA:PBC to just withdraw from the 2019 competition. The competition being held in Israel also brought on religious requests, often around ensuring the competition and all participants are able to observe the Shabbat, which is the day of rest for several religions.

Australia is once again participating, which is fantastic as so far all of their entries have been easily on the top ten of that years contest. Canada is not participating, but is airing the final there, last year America aired the final, and hilst not confirmed to be doing so this year, doesn't seem too unlikely for them to do it again.

It's a little too early for us to know the songs entered fo all a lot are to be revealed early to mid March, although those so far revealed, are for the most part, pretty good sounding so I am expecting another great year for Eurovision!

Eurovision have made a video of songs released so far;

We'll win this year. Sorry guys.

Eh, maybe not.

The British entry is written by John Lundvik, a guy who is taking part in our finals and tipped to win. Check out his Melodifestivalen performance of "Too late for love":

That's not true. She agreed to drop contracts with Russia, but the contract to sign with UA:PBC was unacceptable to her (or any other sane artist) because of absurd requirements and a penalty of 2 millions of any wrong move or wrong word. And since it was obvious political pressure from the government on the winner of the competition chosen by the people, other candidates also refused so not to become strikebreakers and not betray people's choice.

I'm not feeling that vibe from Sweden. UK guy kinda gave me some chills, though. I feel positive about it.

Over the past few years I've not minded, as our sonsg have been pretty mediocre at best. I usually end up voting for Ireland, Sweden or Germanys entry. Undecided where to vote this year so far though.

I'm still hoping it is one day hosted somewhere I can visit to see the competition live, should be one hell of an evening live! I applied to be at the recording of Eurovision - You Decide! the UKs selection programme as it was recorded near me in Salford, Manchester. But I even got turned down to be in the audience for that :(

Finlands song, i have just found out, is Darude, Ft. Rejman - Look Away. Yes, the same Darude who is now world famous for the instrumental 'Sandstorm'. Now this ESC entry is no Sandstorm, but it may help him get votes off the back of Sandstorm. Although possible not, given the British once entered with the quite at once popular and well known boyband 'Blue', which did us no good at all...

And golden oldies like Humperdinck and Tyler did no good either. It's just not your competition, is it? :P

I genuinely felt sorry for Humperdinck lol, poor man. We've won it like 5 times, just... many many decades ago.

Eurovision Trivia: We won in 1969, but so did three other countries, it was a tie between Spain, Netherlands, UK & France. Also Wales tried to participate through BBC Wales, it was rejected as Wales was not a sovereign state, plus the BBC as a whole was the only entity allowed to do Eurovision things for the entire of the UK. They even got as far as to make a national selection programme before it got canned.

Well, we ended up selecting the song I attached earlier. Odds are currently looking toward Netherlands, with Russia and Sweden breathing down their necks. I can't see Russia winning, they keep rehashing Sergey Lazarev and it's not one of his stronger tracks. I also believe that at least some of us Europeans won't like voting for Russia, but then again I thought that could have held back Israel last year and that didn't happen.

Australias entry is a bit... odd.
I think Switzerland, Sweden & Netherlands might be my favourites to win this year. Switzerlands song is very catchy, i do love that.

Yeah... Australia's not winning this year. That's just kooky. That's what I'd expect out of UK *lol*

"Friend of a Friend" by Lake Malawi from Czech Republic is pretty catchy pop.

"22" by Sarah McTernan of Ireland is really smooth, too. That could easily be a hit song in the US, IMO.

Portugal's entry is pretty kooky, too.

I can't see the UK winning. There's no buzz around their entry, and the winner of ESC is usually the most talked about instead of the actual best song. Netherlands, Sweden, Russia, and Switzerland all have a buzz going. Russia, I don't know why. Lazarev has been here before, with a stronger entry too, without winning.

With now only 5 weekends to go, Madonna is reported to be lined up to perform during the interval of the final, for a reported $1,000,000 ($1M) dollars.
Not sure how I feel about that, in past years of recent memory its been a funny little goofy act usually. So hopefully if true, Madonna will keep up with that, instead of try using it to boost her own waning fame or her new track.

Madonna could actually win this year, and maybe there is a place in the big show for the Netherlands. But we don't reach far, with NL.

It's all promotion, obviously. Just like when Justin Timberlake performed at the Eurovision a few years ago, he launched "Can't Stop the Feeling" in Eurovision.
