Re: Restoration
In visited the German Museum of Technology in Berlin and saw some of the old engines there. They really gave no damn about the working conditions of the poor machinists. One engine had poor wooden bench and another did not have even that. I can also imagine the load of the coal dust they all had to inhale. While we may look at these engine in a romantic fashion, being a machinist back in a day was no romance at all by today standards.piratescooby wrote:https://www.facebook.com/RoyalDeesideRa ... f=NEWSFEED , our good old girl on tour . Re: Restoration
Oh hey, an Aberdonian - hi! I've been on the Deeside Railway a couple of times, a very nice project going on there. I also saw the news of the turntable being restored the other day - certainly a good thing, I'm sure.
Re: Restoration
But was it a hell of a well payed job! A senior friend of mine left Londonderry in the 60's and moved to Dumfries and started working as a fireman.luxtram wrote: In visited the German Museum of Technology in Berlin and saw some of the old engines there. In L'Derry, he got payed £2 a week and got 2s 6d detucted of his wage for the stamp leaving him with £1 17s 6d
As a fireman in Dumfries he go £5 18s on the hand!

http://www.citymetric.com/transport/rai ... erful-3094 . A Great article on the work RAILMAPONLINE is doing mapping the lost tramways of the uk .
Re: Restoration
It'd be interesting to compare those lost with the current systems in the cities that have them (Manc, Brum, Notts, etc.). Would also be nice to compare these to the current bus routes that are served (for example, I imagine the main road just up from me would be a prime example for a tram!)
Mods, perhaps this could be moved to the Transport discussion forum? I feel this thread is very relevant over there.

Re: Restoration
Admins please move this topic If you want to ,was just thinking this could lead to a very informative topic , I would like to read more about the trams ,Where I stay we had a very big tramway system , would like to know more about .As we now have a patched version of OTTD [ OpenTTD g1391e949-road-and-tram-types ] and new grfs ,unspooled and docklands , there appears to be a wide variety of trams , would it not be a nice change to have a game based on RV's and Trams , real or fictional .Yes this would be a slow game but I think more of a challenge .Perhaps someone out there would take up the job and create a scenario .
