UK Floods 2015

Post by Redirect Left »

The UK is currently having its worst flooding bout in decades, with the Army being deployed to help assist in any way they can. Many places have already been flooded, but the barriers in York are currently being overwhelmed and the rivers Foss & Ouse are expected to reach their peak later this evening. The barrier that prevents the Foss & Ouse from merging has failed, causing issues. Central Leeds is currently under water in several places, as is parts of Manchester. Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge & Sowerby Bridge have all seen devastating flooding that hasn't been seen for many many years. A 200 year old pub (the first image below) was destroyed near Manchester due to the fierce currents of the flood waters. Rivers in West & North Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Lancashire have reached and exceeded many peak records. Rain is expected to continue on off for the next few days, but shouldn't be enough to cause any more major flooding.
For thousands of people in northern England, this has certainly been an awful end to Christmas celebrations, and an awful way to end 2015!

I hope all of the British members of the board, especially those in Yorkshire, Cumbria & Lancashire where the worst is, are keeping safe and well away from any of the flooding unfolding. I do implore those who live near rivers to keep an eye on local news and/or radio and keep aware of current situations in your area, especially if you live near the Aire, Calder, Colne, Derwent, Foss, Holme, Irwell, Ryburn, Ouse, Seven, Spen, Swale, Wear & Wharfe.

Just got back from Kate's parents in the south Lakes! Here's a few from the lane near the house, which is by a minor river.

After other flooding this is what greeted me at lunchtime on Christmas Day (before the latest floods began)

This is surface water backed up by full drains - about three inches deep:

This is a lane, not a river - it was about six inches deep at this point and I made a couple of VERY stupid moves to get to this point - I got no further.

This is the next day - the stream on the left usually feeds into the river via a culvert under the road, but this is blocked - so the water is finding its own way over the junction

I must stress (if RL didn't do enough already) - do NOT put yourself in danger for photos - I did for the third one there and I was very lucky I'm big enough to not be swept over by a torrent.

Don't know if this is viewable, but: https://www.facebook.com/daveworley0/vi ... 594396325/ - that's a video (with my voice!). You can't see the speed of the river as FB has smashed the quality, but it was very, very fast.

All in all quite scary!

It's been bad up here in Aberdeenshire - the Rivers Dee and Don have both flooded, with Ballater, Braemar and Aboyne very badly hit, as well as parts of Aberdeen. We've been mostly OK in Banchory (and I'm personally at the top of a hill, away from any water sources) but it's not been great generally. Lots of pictures and videos on Facebook ("Fubar News"), as well as some on the BBC etc.
