I came across a news for this product today. You can own a real maglev set this fall.

Takara Tomy, a parent company of Tomix who makes N-scale and HO-scales in Japan, started taking an order for 1/90 scale set of L0 maglev shinkansen. This is a true maglev system - the train floats 2mm above the track. It doesn't look like it's magnetically guided. But it does look pretty fast. They claim that the train runs equivalent of 500km/h if this was scaled up to the actual size.
The second video on the site shows it running side-by-side to what I assume Tomix's own N-scale N700A shinkansen. (Also shown at about 1:23 in the first video)
The news this week was not about the announcement of this product, but about it winning the top spot for the Innovative Toy of the year award from Japan Toy Association.

¥37,800 is only just under £200.
That's not awful pricing actually. Hmm....
