I having been using Windows 8.1 for the last nine months since it came with my new computer on an SSD. Once you get over the loss of the start menu, it's pretty much Win 7. I have my most used programs pinned to the taskbar or on the desktop anyway.

I am surprised MS is releasing it free to 7 and 8 users (but not RT?) - I will take advantage.

It's why a lot of telecoms companies are trying to offer all media - tv, cellular, broadband, when ten years ago these would have been separate businesses.

Only reasonable post I've seen thus far.

You may also consider the possibility that the "legions of idiots" (thank you) using Linux instead of windows don't do that to avoid following the crowd, but just because, for their own reason, they feel better with linux.
I didn't say that every linux user was in a legion of idiots... I said that this specific legion of idiots all use linux ;)

So.....now it's "Linux bashing". What the hell is the matter with those that choose to verbally abuse Linux users. Isn't it obvious that it is peoples personal choice which OS they choose to use?

@Dave: Perhaps you would care to explain why you think some Linux users are "idiots". (maybe some Linux users think that you are an idiot for using a Microsoft OS).

There's an old saying "judge yourself before you judge others"

Also, this topic is supposed to be relevant to Windows 10, I suggest we keep it that way before comments become off topic.
btw, I don't use Linux, never have, probably never will. I'm quite happy to carry on with my Windows 7 Home Edition and wait for the release of Windows 10. As I stated in a previous post, lets just wait and see how it goes.

Cheers.

Here at the University of Leeds all of our lab computers run Windows (7 mostly, occasionally there is some software which isn't compatible hence XP in some cases).
I don't really know, but from what I saw most astronomy image processing software is on Linux. Hence why I saw most people in astronomical researches uses them, not sure anyone else.

Yawn haha. Thanks for the moral advice, but really - if I have an opinion I tend to express it.

There are plenty of Linux users who think all Micrsoft users are idiots. Most of them believe this out of some bizarre idea that Windows isn't suitable - well, I've worked in many workplaces in my shortish career and aside from my current graphic designers using Macs, I've never seen a single company using a non-Windows system.

That's not to say Linux isn't useful, or indeed that I don't admire how it came about or the open nature of development within the community. That's everything I would require for my teams in my workplace when developing.

But it always comes back to the fact you get fanboys in every walk of life - those who start using something to be different and then howl in derision at anyone who doesn't do what they do. These are the legions and legions of idiots to which I refer.

Not changing that view.

Anyway, I will probs get 10 if my laptop will support it, which, as I said, I doubt.

Yawn...haha is about right. I too will state opinions when I feel like it. As I said, this topic refers to Windows 10, so lets keep it that way. There's still no word as to when it will be released. I for one won't be using it until I hear some positive results on it's performance etc. When it comes to computer technology, I only purchase what I need.

Very few bits of software actually do that, though. I don't think there is a common API in Windows that actually returns the textual version string, so Windows software would check for Windows 4.x (4.0 = 95, 4.1 = 98, 4.9 = Me). They might of course get confused with Windows NT 4.0 though. Windows 2000 became 5.0, XP 5.1, Vista 6.0. Since then, Windows has been stuck at version 6... Windows 7 was 6.1, 8 was 6.2, 8.1 was 6.3, and 10 will be 6.4!

Maybe not actual software but old software ("countless outdated but still used ancient softwares") asks often for "Windows 9..." as a string. It's at least a coherent explanation even I don't know if this is the one and only reason.

I saw one example of it (that resulted in numerous articles, Slashdot posts, etc) involving some obscure Java application - I really don't think it's a major issue or the reason Microsoft would have skipped Windows 9. Apparently the number 9 is unlucky in Japan though, which might be slightly more logical (not that it's particularly logical anyway).

No 7 is also unlucky in several countries, mainly europeon ones that also dislike '13'. In russia, all even numbers are unlucky (and equally all odd ones are lucky), in Japan & Korea, 8 & 9 are unlucky.
So that would make no sense what so ever :p

and I also know far too much about random stuff

I am currently running windows 10 tech preview.

I'd have to say it is pretty good, the metro apps and menu seem to been quite useless though... I suppose that was a windows 8 thing, and I missed that whole part of the windows evolution.

Now if only they wouldn't shove bing down your throat with their stupid cortona search bar, which is broken half the time :D

They are skipping 9 because of windows 95 and 98, they don't want naming conflicts...

And yes, every other version of windows is good, therefore 10 will be marvelous. (As I have been observing)

I'm scared Locomotion will work even worse on 10 than 8.1. Do you think it will even if i use capability mode? OPenTTD is updating so i guess that's no problem.

@PhilliThunder:....Unknown. I don't use Windows 10 at the moment, (not likely to in the near future). I'm unsure of the "Compatability" capabilities of Windows 10.

Sorry I can't offer any further information.

Cheers.

Tomorrow is the big day. Curious how it will go. Apparently the download is already done, so might be that my laptop upgrades itself tomorrow.
