bad page, as the title says: "News.co..."

what's more interesting:

a) are my programs etc working without reinstall and reconfig (e.g tortoise settings)
b) is my local user still a local user or do they force a conversion to a M$ account
c) is my profile staying like that, with my icons, themes,....
d) is there any crap left over that i have to delete manually?
e) is the upgrade 1000% safe?
f) where do i get the iso and key? by mail?

I prefer commercial software to open source. Open-source is usually either buggy or not feature complete. As an example is the linux. I can find no good distribution that would support my graphics card (Geforce GT240), the latest ubuntu kind of works, but I see weird blinking and artifacts on screen.
I'm still on Windows XP though. I dont see much sense to upgrade to 7 or 8, they are all the same, there is nothing superior with this OSes beside maybe the look. It's just a hype and human gullibility to believe that something newer is better. Actually I can observe the opposite - in many cases the newer things tend to be worse - overengineered and awkward to use.

EDIT: And yeah, missing number 9 in the numerations of versions is damn retarded.

you have no idea ;)

i have a server running debian, worksperfectly, ultra stable, ultra secure

work laptop, old hp, with ubuntu 14, even supports those touch-keys from the hp laptop to enable disable wifi etc.

XP is HORRIBLE ! It's slow, you can't quickly search for stuff, i badly supports newer hardware, it's full of security flaws, it's f*** 12 years old....
Win 7 was INSTANTLY faster than xp and much more secure. I don't even use an antivirus since (ok I work in the IT, I know what to click/download, and what not ;) )

@Phreeze: ....it seems to me that "you have no idea"

I used XP fpr many years. Although I agree that it was slow,(the more software you installed, the slower it got). Apart from that, I didn't have many problems. You claim to be in the I.T. industry, then you should know, that every Microsoft OS that was ever produced had its flaws. In my opinion, Windows 10 will be no different. As I said previously, I don't have 10, so I cannot comment on it's performance etc.

As for news.com.au being a bad page, where did you get that Idea from. I've been using that site for many years, never had a problem with it. It's where I obtain local/world news from, although I do use other sites as well.

Anyhow, good luck with Windows 10. Perhaps you would like to comment on it here after further use.

Oh, btw.........When I had XP, I never installed any Microsoft security updates. I had/have an excellent anti viral program, anti spyware/malware, all of which monitored my usage very well including emails inward and outward. However, as we all know, there is no such thing as safe browsing. 10 will be no different.

Cheers,

Greyfox

XP slow? Maybe a little. Before I had 7(which unfortunately was illegal) and I didn't feel much of a difference. I guess that if I was to buy new PC I would have to go for 7 or 8, but my 7 years old PC is still easily handling most of the software that's not graphics intensive (like games).
XP is 12 years old but that doesnt mean anything, Transport Tycoon has 20 years and OpenTTD which doesn't makes a big difference to it is played after the original game was released in the past.

About linux - it's perhaps good for server stuff, but I never had a good experience with it when it comes to user interfaces and now, as I've said, I cant find a distro that would support my GPU. About Ubuntu 15.04 there is also a different issue - in the installation process it can't find exisiting partitions on my hard drive.

And with not installing security updates, you leave the door wide open, no matter how good the rest of your security programs are. There might not be such a thing as safe browsing, but not installing security updates certainly does not help with getting even near safe browsing.

Only thing it means is that it is no longer supported, and thus not receiving updates for bugs that might pose a serious risk. Of course, for simple text editing it is fine, but I would not leave it connected to the Internet (especially if there are problems with that computer and I have to solve them, I have better things to do than play helpdesk).

You cant get infected your PC by simply browsing the web. You would have to download and run malicious software.

You can however be infected by simply connecting to the Internet. There are people out there looking for computers with open ports or ports that have known broken services running on them that they can hack/attack you with.

@lukasz1985:....@Transportman...... You need to think again. As I stated, "I never had any problems", that includes security issues. I can assure you, if you browse the web without using security software, your computer will be infected within 30 minutes, or thereabouts.

@PhilliThunder: "softonic" ?....I would never use that again, full of spyware. I refuse to click on the link because of that very reason.

Take note of the post made by beclawat, he is absolutely correct.

Also, I started this topic so that people can discuss issues with Windows 10, and express their opinions of it and report any problems therein. I suggest we keep "on topic", and not drift away from the subject. Otherwise we may be "jumped" on by a moderator.
(just friendly advice).

No it will not. Browser doesn't allow access to filesystem from the level of a webpage's scripts. Even Flash applications have security sandbox that doesn't allow this. And even if there were some nasty plugins in the browser - that's not the job of OS to secure from it, it's the user who is responsible for not installing malicious software including browser plugins.

That's correct but opening ports is not what an avarage user does.

Nope. Believe me, I know what I'm saying, I was a web developer for 2 years and I know what a web page is allowed to do and what it's not allowed to.

Take it from someone who works with computers and fixes computers on a regular basis, the average user is the worst person for opening ports on their computers because they don't even realise it. It's the uneducated who fill their computers with malware and malicious programs and see nothing wrong, and then wonder why their computers are running at a sluggish pace or doing things they shouldnt be doing under normally circumstances. AVERAGE users are exactly the reason why we have to have anti-virus software and internet security.

Nope to "nope". I could say: "Believe me, I know better, what I'm saying, I am a web developer since 15 years.".

Relevant is: What a web page is allowed to "do", is only the theory. Surprisingly there are bugs and unconsidered corner cases in software products like browsers, JavaScript- or Flash-interpreters and these bugs are exploited to take over the computer. And there are users and many of them will click on every link in every email and on every website.

It is definitely possible to take over a computer with a harmful script on a webpage. Maybe not in Poland, but everywhere else on this planet it is.

@auge.............Thank you very much. Your post is exactly what I"m trying to explain. Amazing that so many will not listen to people that know.

@lukasz1985......then I suggest that you un-install all of your security software, then restart your computer. Then surf the web for about half an hour or so, and see how far you get. If nothing happens, fine. However, re-install all of the software and run scans of the appropriate software, including anti spyware/malware etc, and you will find some "nastys" have installed themselves on your computer, that is if you don't have to re-install the OS. Good luck!! (read my profile).

This will be my last post on the subject of security issues of other OS's. As I stated before, this topic should be for Windows 10 issues only, and for those that use it and wish to comment on it.

Good luck everybody.
