TT Meet 2014 - Glasgow - 7th June 2014 [SIGN UP!]

Post by orudge »

Hello all,

So, it's been decided that the 2014 meet will be held in Glasgow on the 7th June 2014 (a Saturday). Further information on the meet can be found at the wiki link below. If you think you will be able to make it, please update the wiki page with your name:

http://www.tt-wiki.net/wiki/TT_Meet_2014

If you're not definitely sure you can make it, but think you can, please update it anyway. Just click Edit and add "* ~~~~" in the appropriate category, and the wiki software will autocomplete your name. (You use the same login for the wiki as for the forums.)

More information will be published when we've decided what we'll actually be doing on the day and so on. If you have any thoughts, please post them here! Suggestions for things to do on the day, in particular, would be welcome. (I'm currently thinking a trip to the Transport Museum would be good!)

For reference, the old discussion topic is here.

EDIT (31/05/2014): Please see the attached PDF document for information on the plans for the day.

Technically still a "maybe" until I've actually booked. Train from Huddersfield currently looking a better bet than Coach from Leeds, but will probably need to book a room to avoid being dumped in Manchester at 2am on Sunday!
Would welcome travel companions for part or all of the journey, and as my plans emerge I'll update here and on the wiki.

PM if you are also staying over, as it can make a big difference if you split the cost- though if I could book now it'd be under £20 anyway!

Hmmm maybe. Will have to see what I'm doing nearer the time, but I would be travelling from Leeds.

Money is tight in this climate so no way can i afford the extortionate rail fare.
Coach tickets would be cheaper, but sitting on a motorway for 5+ hours in the summer heat* would probably turn me into a rabid psychopath.

*If we actually get a summer this year, that is! :D

I'd wait a few days and see if there are any cheaper tickets available. For instance, I'm not seeing any advance fares yet for the 7th itself from Aberdeen to Glasgow, but they're now showing for the 6th, so in theory tomorrow I should be able to book at much cheaper ticket for the 7th...

For instance, looking at a Saturday in May, I see Wolverhampton to Glasgow Central, getting you in at 11:03, for £25, and then the return journey in the evening for £16. Not too bad, I'd say!

I may come depending on work/colege conditions. I'm inclined to use the Sleeper this time...

You'll hopefully be able to grab a "Bargain Berth" - should be pretty cheap in that case. :)

What time would most people be around for? Currently looking at getting the first train there and last train back so I'd arrive at Queen Street at 11:40 and would leave at 6.

Edit: booked now

I think I'm going to try to be there for some time between 10am and 11am, depending on whether I get a train down or drive (might be taking the family to Glasgow and staying the night, making a weekend of it). We usually meet in a pub to begin with, so The Counting House on St Vincent Place, just outside Queen Street station, may be a good venue for that. Basically wherever we meet it'll be a short walk from the main railway stations.

Sounds good. Booked direct through East Coast and managed to get return tickets for £19.90 which is very good!

Camperdown Place is a Wetherspoons under Queen Street station.

Normally quieter than the Counting House :)

That might be a plan then. Will have a think and may ask you for further suggestions/advice, if I may, nearer the time, Ploes. :)

Also staying in that area to the City Centre has the benefit of being on the LowLevel line or Subway out to Partick if we want to go to the Transport Museum.

Just completed my booking!

The fact I've had to wait 4 days (thanks, IDS! X( ) has cost me about £15 due to the only advances available now being the 'not quite such a bargain' ones, but never mind...

I leave HUD at 0540 on TPE to York, connecting into the 0634 to Waverley, then the 0930 to Queen Street arriving 1021 at a cost of £15.15
Returning on saturday would have pushed the price into three figures, so I decided a £13.50 hostel booking was a better bet. Probably not the best hostel, but I'm not overly fussy about that. For the record, it's the 'Blue Sky Hostel' on Berkeley Street.
Return is from Queen Street at 1200, into the 1300 to York then the 1545 to Huddersfield. £27.95 is slightly more than I hoped to pay, but what can you do?

Looking forward to it! :D

Looking at this properly now, if it was a week before it would have been easy to get up to Glasgow as there wouldn't be any college...

Now, it seems to be a bit difficult, if I got an early train its at least £40 each way, Megabus Gold sleeper is £40 single, Cal Sleeper is £40 single (or near enough £100 to the way I want it)... I think there is a trend happening here...

Edit, I just for fun tried Pembroke Dock (where the summerhouse is) to GLC... £200 return

Edit 2: Now, I've just looked at EZY's flights from London - Glasgow, £60 return is much better than what the railways have to offer!

From Glasgow Airport you can either get the 500 bus - £8 for a day ticket including all First Glasgow buses, or £8.50 for an open return.

Or get a rail ticket to From Glasgow Airport, with the bus to Paisley Gilmore Street and the onto Central.

Evidently not looking hard enough.

For a start, advance fares are not available yet on Virgin Trains.

Secondly, I can find it for £67.30 entirely in First for less than 2 weeks out. A bit cheaper in Standard, but the value is much higher in First of course since you'll get a meal and service.

I'm still tempted with at least flying in - worth the experience!
