Confused

Post by kdalts »

Guys... can someone post a very simple reply that can answer the following please?
  • What is a 'Nighly'?
    What is OpenTTD?
    What is TTDPatch?
Do they go in the same directory or are they seperate games to be installed in seperate folders>
Do you need them installed in any particular order?

Finally, I installed the latest 'nightly' but the 'competitors' did not work (they all where named 'failedWright' or something and didn't build anything), so is Noghtly an on-line only game or did I miss something?

TTD 0.6.3 doesn't have the signalling options but the 'competitors' work fine. R????? has the signals but the competitors don't work correctly??

Thanks in advance

For most of this, the Wiki holds the answers. Now you know. :D

A 'Nightly' is a snapshot of the current development. It is called that because it's compiled nightly.

OpenTTD is a complete rewrite of the original TTD code after reverse-engineering it.

TTDPatch is exactyl that: A patch for the original game that introduces new features.

They do not go in the same directory, as they are separate games. TTDPatch does go into the same folder as the original though, and OTTD requires some of the original's GRFs for the graphics.

See above. You can install both in any order you like, since they're separate games.

The AI in the nightlies is -- since they're development builds -- a revamp of the old code that doesn't quite work yet.

Are you saying that the 'competitors' in Nighly's don't work?

Cheers

That may be true for OTTD although Hamilton2007's reply would seem to indicate that this has been fixed.

Note that with TTDPatch, the AI (Artificial Intelligence or "competitors") has always worked, even with TTDPatch's nightly releases. The only drawback is that the AI, lacking human intelligence, can often seem to be rather stupid. I do not know if this is the case with OTTD's recent AI implementation.

TTDPatch and OTTD are distinctly different as witnessed by the fact that each has it's own section on these forums, although, with a few notable exceptions, they are able to use the same grf graphics equally.

As each has some unique features, you may want to explore both to determine which best satisfies your gaming needs. As with several players on these forums, you may very well find yourself using each at one time or another according to your current scenario.

Either way, enjoy the game. :D
