ok , then the best way to use ships is wait for the hovercraft, they are quick and earn good
i also use oil transporting ships for oil rigs, but docks should be visible on the maximum sized map, it would take too long otherwise
just play a bit, if ships loose money, perhaps shorten the distance and use the unload function , so oil is en-route and then take it with trains to the oil refinery, that way both earn money
