Backseat moderation
Hi all,
Just a little reminder that the moderators and administrators of the forums would prefer it if users would refrain from so-called "backseat moderation". If there is something that requires attention by a moderator, or somebody has violated a rule, please use the Report Post icon to alert us. If action needs to be taken in a thread, a moderator will then post a message letting users know what the score is.
Cheers,

Re: Backseat moderation
Infact could you maybe add an option for the report post thing so if we feel it is appropriate we can report backseat moderation?

Re: Backseat moderation
Does this include things as simple as "please don't talk in all caps"? That is, would that be considered "backseat moderation," or is that neologism confined to use for more serious offenses?
Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction. - Albert Einstein
Re: Backseat moderation
Backseat moderation is when normal forum members tell other forum members to obey the rules in an unfriendly, condescending, "know it all" way. That type is behaviour is restricted to moderators only. In short:
- Moderators can tell people to obey te rules
- Normal forum member can kindly ask another forum member to obey the rules

Re: Backseat moderation
I was about to make a backseat moderating comment about backseat moderating but it even confused me.

That would be rather hypocritical of yourself.Mr. X wrote:I was about to make a backseat moderating comment about backseat moderating but it even confused me.

Unbelieveable comment. Another pointer to the gradual decline of standards of moderation on this forum.Hyronymus wrote:Backseat moderation is when normal forum members tell other forum members to obey the rules in an unfriendly, condescending, "know it all" way. Another occasion where I should've ended with [/sarcasm] appearently. If it took anyone two days to fall over it I seriously wonder how harmful it was though. I hope the definitions below can get your approval?Dave Worley wrote:Unbelieveable comment. Also, to reiterate again:- the report button is for more than just spam! Most of the things we get in there are either spam, or large signature complaints and the like, which is great -: but then we have people prancing around telling other users off when that's our job!

True, but can you point me to a definition of what is properly? Besides, I gave 2 definitions without being sarcastic.Dave Worley wrote:Well if you'd do it properly there wouldn't be a problem would there?

And I'd suppose Dave would make a better moderatorDave Worley wrote:Unbelieveable comment. Another pointer to the gradual decline of standards of moderation on this forum.
Personally I believe that the moderators to a great job to make things better for the good of the whole community. And because over half of the users here speak a first language that is not English, it would be nice if we didn't shout them down every time they made a grammatical error..

Re: Backseat moderation
I'm curious if someone ever have reported a post made by me, and for what if someone did.
Re: Backseat moderation
Stay curious, I don't think there is any mod who wants to share that.
