Is it important to get the stations close to the industries?

I'm not pro at OTTD, but it looks to me like it is beneficial to get the train station as close as possible to the industry. Is that correct? It seems that the closer the station is, the more product ends up in your station. Also, I don't think this is a huge earth-shattering tip, but I like to build up land if there is an oil rig near the shore so that I can get trains to service the oil rig. Trains have a lot more capacity than ships, and they're much faster too.
