Hello. Resulting from a large amount of confusion over my old topic (people refused to view my photos because they thought I was using Imageshak), I've now changed over to Flickr!, and signed up for a two-year account there.

So far the images are cleaner, and display better than at fotopic (which I was using previously), and it is far easier to work with.

Also remember I have a Youtube account too, which contains (among others), my video of 3112 in steam at Central Station, as well as a selection of sparks. I'm also in the process of uploading some videos from my trip to Newcastle.

Recently, I have uploaded some b/w photos of trains at Chatswood, as well as some shots of the construction at Chatswood.

Nice photos mate!! Good to get some shots of the 620\720 railcars as they will be phased out very soon. I have only caught one home form uni this month compared to last month when they were the most common train i caught home. Rather disapointing as i love the soft seets and windows you can open (as well as the gas heater!!).

Good images! Your YouTube account description still wants me to go to fotopic.

Awesome pics as usual, I love that old 620 multiple unit thing, I want one! However, just to be annoying, I preferred fotopic, on Flickr I can't figure out how to go through all the pictures in order while still having their description up, at the moment i have to go on slideshow but click on every pic to get its description.

Don't worry, figured it out now, if anyone else was as clueless as me, just click on an individual photo, and then go to the next one/previous one using the mini-window to the right.

Photos of my hour at the Harbour Bridge on Saturday April 28 have been uploaded, showing not only The Harbour Bridge being rained on, but also somewhat rare shots of interurban trains on the Bridge.

Cheers Jose, good to hear from a local. I'll be making another trip north this week, as I'm interested in getting more photos of them lineside - I've already scouted out some good gunzeling positions - the bridge at Beresford seems a good start, Thornton has some good access and views of both freight and passenger workings. Maitland disapointed me though, most of the time my shots were blurry due to the limited window I could take a photo in.

Are there any stations/locations lineside you recommend? I don't mind walking a bit, but I don't intend to tresspass (not that I believe you would encourage that), and I am limited by my reliance on public transport (rail preferred, as I'm far from being a local).

I hope to get more photos of the 620's though, as I will sorely miss them (as you will) when they are gone D:

Thanks Michael. I've signed up very cheaply on Flickr! (about $60AUD for a 2 year unlimited upload, unlimited storage package, which is good), and it links me to my LJ mostly automatically. With Aegirs help, I've also got a means to put more images in my LJ, which will save people flipping between the LJ and the Flickr! for descriptions about photos.

I am glad to have proper hosting for my photos that is not only clear and easy for ME to use, it's also easy for my visitors to use to access them. I'm experimenting with b/w photos more, as well as different angles for shots - I need to talk to some more advanced photographer gunzel friends of mine to find more techniques and angles.

I'm glad I can finally share MY photos and information with you too, Michael. It's been a long time coming, as I'm sure you know . Thankyou for your support!

No problemo, I hope you can take a look at my new pictures of the REAL ( ) Newcastle station I'll be uploading today! I do find it quite funny that Newcastle, NSW even shares the names of some of its suburbs with Newcastle, Tyne and Wear (Jesmond, Stockton, Hexham)!

Obviously the British settlers of the era decided not to think up new names, and just steal ones that from back home.

Wow: What a terrible bad track in that last picture.
I wouldn't even shunt at 10 km/h over that.
Look at all that sand and the start of a complete jungle between the sleepers.
By that water stays between the tracks so the sleeper rot away.
No wonder you have there a lot of derailments caused by bad, or even better, lack of maintenance.

Well, thats the track 1-2m in front of the buffers, only the longer trains approach that close to the buffers. Certainly the bits of track the trains use are kept in proper condition.



I agree - you'd smack the buffers trying to shunt over that jungle!

Now thats a bit harsh. How do you mean "lot of derailments"... We have quite few, those that do occour usually happen on the really, really rural lines, and are ususally the result of extreme temperatures, not poor maintenence.

I can't think of any derailment caused by poor track maintenence, certainly not one involving loss of life.

Ah the places where i head off to to gunzel are Sandgate and Warrabrook (university station). I have only ever passed through Berresfield and Maitland on the the Xplorer.
Sandgate is good as it has a footbridge with a nice view, 6 tracks (2 main north, 2 Kooragang Branch and 2 port waratah branch). Plus if you are lucky you may be able to see LRVF trains out of Toll sidings. There are not very many trains that stop there though which could be an advantage or a disadvantage.

Hmm, it may certainly be worth checking out those locations as well. However, only one train per hour stops at Sandgate? May get some good moving shots of passenger services there



Is there much lineside? Beresfield has the advantage of a chainlink fence and a pathway, just next to the coal lines, so one can get good shots there.

The footbridge sounds interesting - the footbridges at Thornton and Beresfield were too high for good angles, and the one at Maitland... well, half the view is blocked by the road bridge, and the other half, station buildings get in the way of a decent angle.



Yes, that does sound interesting. May also be able to get some long-distance snaps of trains on the flyover?



I could always ask a friend who works with the railways what times those trains will be there, and on what days. It's certainly worth investigating, say what you will about LVRF (or Independant Railways of Australia, as they are now known, iirc), they have some "interesting" consists.

Can't say I care for their ex-Danish locomotives (they don't fit with NSW railways....), but some of their older ALCOS covered in grime and graffiti make for interesting photos!



Well, this time I am planning to take some foods with me (I didn't realise there was NOTHING nearby any of the stations - not even maitland to get eats at), so I'll trip it out along the line, and hopefully be back in Newcastle for a late lunch (ie, arrive Newcastle past 10am, breakfast, be on a train to Sandgate, gunzel for an hour, then move on to Beresfield or the University station, gunzel a bit, then return to Newcastle on the next up local).

Might get up there friday. Doing something a bit more local on thursday

All tracks are as close to Sandgate Station as they could be, a kneehigh brick wall is the only barrier on the Port Waratah side and like Berresfield the Kooragang island branch has a chain link fence just off the station. all 6 tracks are lineside as the coal lines go go through, Kooragang branch starts under the flyover and curves off just past the station. Warrabrook is alright but there are much better places (i go there so i dont need to get another Ticket ).
Some of the nice things i have seen in the last few days (wish my camera worked) a 82-82-82-82-81 (in NR livery) coalie pulling into Broadmeadow yard and a nohab-nohab-44-44-44 LRVF train heading north.
