Water tunnels ?

Post by Luz »

How about water tunnels?

Instead of building over stuff with canals, build under them with a tunnel like roads and trains ?

I generally think the whole ships thingy ingame is to small at the moment :)
Build around it, build over it, build under it! I dont care get me my stuff!

This has been suggested before:
http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?t=7458
slightly mentioned on http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?t=13222

The general concept of a ship tunnel, I don't particularly like. However, the road/rail block-off for canals is quite annoying. Maybe it should be made so that you can substitue a 3 tile stretch of road/rail with the best bridge available (with option of lowering the terrain to sea level), regardless of who owns the road/rail.

Well what about signals and junctions that are in those areas?

This is from a place where I used to go on holiday with my parents: Canal de la Marne a la Saone. And it is very old too. It's 4820 meter long and it is in France.

I'm not trying to argue that they don't exist or are unrealistic. But the ships in those pictures don't look like oil barges or hovercraft that can carry 100 passengers...

That's right, I also don't like the idea of having massive tankers going through the canals...

The standard ships in OTTD don't look to me like massive tankers  . Besides, that canal was made in 1880. So maybe massive oil tankers should be like 2 squares wide and 4 squares long or so, but thats not the topic here. Well, maybe these tunnels should only be enterable by small ships or so. Anyway, It doesn't look realistic to me that you can have massive oil tankers all over the map even in the middle of the land. The standard ships look to me as if they are supposed to be canal vessels and not really sea vessels.

I was talking about attached screenshots. OTTD locks and canals are in size of that canals.
I'm not talking about big, deep canals for big ships. OTTD canals just look like recreational canals (for boats, maybye small fishing ships)

OTTD can build canals, maybe they should also allow canal tunnel and bridge building?

You can join as many canal blocks as you want and the walls are removed where they join, perhaps the same could be done to the locks so that there is giant locks.

I'm all for this.

Recently finished a game where 2 guys proceeded to destroy mine and 3 other companies who happened to be using ships and tankers. They were both on the same team and raised land all over the place blocking canals and other routes. To make sure they did the ob right they placed land buying signs all over them making it impossible for us to overcome.

I did happen to take some screenshots using the in-game feature but I can't seem to find them now  They were definately saved though, but don't seem to be in any of my directories :?:

If a "water tunnel" was implemented it would be advantageous to many people, especially if you have idiots raising land and purchasing it.

Just saw this posted on another forum... a water bridge.

Image

This is what was posted underneath...

Code: Select all

Six years, 500 million euros, 918 meters long.......now this is engineering!
This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe and joins the former East and West Germany, as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg, near Berlin. The photo was taken on the day of inauguration.
Now, this is something I'd love to see in OTTD :D

Looks awesome!

Having the same possibilities with water as you have with rails/roads.

Difficulity to code: 'I guess, but I'm not a developer.' :)

I think canale tunnels would have higher chance of being done if someone does graphics for them..
