Thats ok mate, I'm hoping to gain some programming knowledge and experience, and I do enjoy playing OpenTTD too!

Maybe the incoming train could be detected by looking at all trains within a certain radius of the station and checking if any of them is coming there?

It would also be nice to combine this with partial load such that even if another train comes in, the previous train waits until it's at least xx% full.

Perhaps we could have a full-blown train scripting engine in the future?

The first thing you suggested is possible and the second is even more. :)
The second should be covered by the default OTTD patch "FIFO loading".

Train scripting engine? That might be good, but a full blown Quake/UT-like patch inclusion system would be sweet. :D
