How to handle Open TTD
Having become curious about TTD Open, the other day I downloaded the new 0.4.0.1-2_i386.deb from one of the mirrors. Now my problem is that it comes in a form that I cannot open. WinZip will make a WinZip folder of it, but then again I can’t open THAT. Help, somebody! Also, what do I do to try out TTD Open and get my feet wet? What folders or files do I need? I’m quite a novice, and no geek. Jack (j.verheydt@hetnet.nl)
That is quite a feat you have done there

Always get one of the above ones. You can just extract the zip file copy the data files from TTDLX and start playing, or download the installer which helps you through the install. Good luck!Download openttd-0.4.0.1-win32.exe
Download openttd-0.4.0.1-win32.zip

Open TTD again
Thanks much for helping me out. I'm too stupid to know what deb means....I was now able to download a WinZip version. But now I cannot open it after unzipping; I get the message "This is an OS/2 32-bit executable." What do I do now ? And what auxiliary progs. do I need to make it run properly? Or should I just download the whole lot from Sourceforge? And can I install my more than 140 savegames and scenarios from TTDX in it?

As Darkvater said, you need to get openttd-0.4.0.1-win32.zip or openttd-0.4.0.1-win32.exe. For the rest of the stuff (data files), read the wiki or the readme.
No longer active here, but you can still reach me via email: luca[at]stackednotion[dot]com
I almost flamed you Jack you were acting so ehm... I'd rather not say.
Download the executable file, openttd-0.4.0.1-win32.exe as lucaspiller said it. Then run the install program. You will need your TTDLX CD or installed TTDLX to copy the data files from there. Once it's up and running you can copy all your ttdlx savegames to the save/ folder or browse to them ingame.

Hey, is this forum, and the computer game scene in general, only for teenage geeks? I happen to be a 74 year old invalid who is doing his best to keep up and understand things in a jargon I frequently don’t know. It’s easy for you to talk, Zoetermeer. Go “flame” somebody else, if you must. I have a hard enough time as it is.
P.S. By the way, thanks, Remian, for your tip.

Well, Reme, I'm back again. The nerd in Zoetermeer will be laughing his head off....... I downloaded the correct 32-bit game, and now THAT will not run. Message: "Cannot open file d:\Games\Open ttd0.4.0.1-OS2\Data\Sample\Cat". Now what? What more do I need? Or did I originally give an incorrect name to the recipient folder? Did not think that was critical.
Jack. By the way, sorry if I misread your name and said Remian. Got confused with Debian, I guess......

You need sample.cat, trg1r.grf, trgcr.grf, trghr.grf, trgir.grf and trgtr.grf from your copy of TTD.jack verheydt wrote:"Cannot open file d:\Games\Open ttd0.4.0.1-OS2\Data\Sample\Cat".
If the grf files don't exist, look for them without the second 'r': trg1.grf, trgc.grf, trgh.grf, ...
Copy all six of them (sample.cat & the 5 GRF files) to your data/ directory.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Sorry Jack if I insulted yo or it seemed that way, but it is a bit frustating to hear the same question over and over again. People, and I also automatically presume a decent computer-knowledge of the users here based on previous experience. Just say, as you have already, that you are not that sufficient with a computer and people will be a lot more lenient.
I hope }T{Reme [Q_G] and Dalestan's posts helps to get the game working. The wiki might also help; http://wiki.openttd.org/index.php/FAQ_installation

And in case you are unsure of where to retain those data files in case your old discs have become corrupted over time, have a look at the following link:DaleStan wrote:You need sample.cat, trg1r.grf, trgcr.grf, trghr.grf, trgir.grf and trgtr.grf from your copy of TTD.jack verheydt wrote:"Cannot open file d:\Games\Open ttd0.4.0.1-OS2\Data\Sample\Cat".

Thanks to the help of several of you, I have downloaded TTD Open and got it to work, finally, and I would like to comment that all the changes from TTDX seem to be that there are more buildings and possibilities to tweak the options, which is a step forward in itself. Perhaps you don’t need all the auxiliary programs, such as TTD Alter, etc., now (I hope). There are no new vehicles, particularly ships such as ocean liners, specialized cargo vessels, etc., and the graphics seem to be unchanged, on the whole. I wonder now if ss0 and sv0 scenarios can be transferred to Open TTD………… Meanwhile, thanks for everything. Jack.

Hello mr. Verheydt
There is no new things in frash-from-the-box OpenTTD. However, there is ways to get in new vehicle sets made by this community or others. You may want to look around Here.
I'll give you a short tutorial on how to install grf files (Graphic packages) into OpenTTD. I'll use the Norwegian Transet (NTS) as an example, as it is the one i partly maintain myself.
First, you will need to download the grf file from wherever it is located - For the NTS, see this link. Once you got it downloaded and unzipped, copy the file which name ends with .grf to your Data folder inside you OpenTTD folder. Then, open the file named openttd.cfg in OpenTTDs root foler with Notepad or a similar plain text editor. At the bottom of the file, add this:
Replace filename.grf with the actual name of the grf file you got from the zip. In most cases, this will remove the trains allready in the game and replace them with the ones in the set. Thus, older savegames will not work. You can remove the set from the game at any time somply by removing the line above, allthough then savegames saved with the set running will not work properly.
Good luck!

Thanks, Thor Rune, I'll try it out tomorrow, for it looks complicated and I may need time to get it right. Seemingly, the old grf files will not work, and must be replaced? I hadn't expected that. And it seems that I'm in for some surprises in the graphics department !
As for Mr.X: Well, no need to go wow....although I do appreciate it. Since I'm an invalid now the computer is all I have. I used to love music, play the piano and drive a car, but can't do that anymore, since I am totally deaf and suffer from problems with my equilibrium as a result of a stroke. I am very grateful that I have oodles of hobbies, however, and my brain is still functioning ! I may be 74, but I am still a child at heart....... Jack.

Hello mr. Verheydt
Old grf files will work, and you will be able to play with the old trains using those old GRF files. However, adding new trains is not possible at the persent time. Thus, you have to replace the old trains of wich runs in the game to be able to use different trains.
By the way, one you get used to the game again and fell fluent with it, maybe even it's getting boring, you might want to try and play it online against up to 8 other people at once. It adds another level of challange, allthough you have to live with saboteurs that loves to ruin the game for other people. Fun nevertheless.
As for new things in the game now, there is multiple things. For instance, most noticable visually, is the ability to use a higher schrren resolution whilst playing. There is also the bigger maps, wich means you have much, much more space to play on. Then you have a lot of feautures for hindering mass clicking. For instance, before, bulding a long line of diagonal rail, or placing many tres or signals, meant a whole lot of klicks. Now there is drag-and-drop functions for pretty much all previously click-demanding tasks.
Well, again, enjoy the game!
