Large Maps and Multistop finished.

Post by Celestar »

Thanks to Tron's amazing work, support for Large Maps has been added into the source a couple of minutes ago. Map sizes can be selected from 64x64 to 2048x2048 tiles, and the maps do not need to be square. However, we need EXTENSIVE testing of the new feature, as Tron said that bugs and catches are likely to be found, this includes possible savegame losses of such games. So everyone, go out and play! We'll try to get the windows nightlies running asap.

On another note, I have committed support for multiple road stops for one station. Currently up to 8 stops are possible, but that limit can be changed easily. There as well, feedback and bug reports are more than welcome.

Notes by Darkvater:
You can change map size in the 'configure patches' window. It's under 'Interface->X-size/Y-size'. Since there is no gui for it yet, this will have to do. Valid values range from 6 to 11.
  • 6 = a 64 tile long/wide map
  • 7 = a 128 tile long/wide map
  • 8 = a 256 tile long/wide map (normal size)
  • 9 = a 512 tile long/wide map
  • 10 a 1024 tile long/wide map
  • 11= a 2048 tile long/wide map
So a 6x7 map is 64x128. 11x11 is 2048x2048 map!! Creation of this map took about 25 seconds on my AMD 1.3GHz, an autosave is approximately 5MB in size and takes 3 seconds. Please also note that on really big maps you can run out of industries/towns so set them to low otherwise your map will NEVER get generated. Also use townnames that don't have fix names. Swiss is not good, since the game will run out of townnames and you will never get to play. Well, have fun :D

You might try compiling the latest SVN.
Or you could just wait until a new nightly is posted. That would work too.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

The Windows nightly is available for download. Users of other OSes should build an svn checkout manually.

THE MAPS ARE HUGE!!!!!

VERY VERY VERY NICE!

My feedback:
1 - Too slow at generating the map. It takes way too much to create the map on my PIV 3.06GHz when compared to 0.3.6
2 - there are too few cities and industries even when defined in the difficulty options to High :?

These are my first impressions, hope they help :)

Wow, amazing work, I can't believe how large a 2048x2048 map actually is, takes about 1 min just to scroll from one corner to the other lol

2048x2048 maps do generate properly for me with industries and towns set to high but it takes 55(!) seconds on my Athlon XP3000 and I presume the industry list got full because I only got oil refinaries and nothing else lol
It generates a LOT LOT quicker setting them both to low (about 10-15 seconds)

A 64x2048 map looks fun...gonna try and build a single backbone trainline to run the entire length of the map

Some info

1) Currently the hard limit for stations, towns, industries etc have not been raised yet. This is possibly happen sometime next week.

2) The old map generator has problems with these map sizes, not only because of the limits in 1). A new map generator has been developed, but it is not finished yet.

Nice, can't wait :)

For now I'll stick with 0.3.6 since it's more player friendly :)
