[Beta 0.2 Released] Maglev

Post by Rens2Sea »

- No more tight curves
- Only 4 trains now, 2 passengers, 2 cargo
- All trains have new stats

1 track, 1 bridge, 4 locomotives and 8 wagons.

For technical data and install guide click here.
And for the download click here.

This mod wasn't meant to be realistic in any way so please stop talking about realistic maglevs like in my Alpha thread
and please don't post YOUR maglev mods here, make your own thread.
Thank you.

What kind of speed limits are on the wagons? I presume 150ish max for cargo, and A LOT more for passengers. Then at least your 2 cargo, 2 passenger split is usefuller.

210 cargo, 250 passengers. Would be a bit useless to have slow wagons on fast locomotives :P

Very cool. Any plans to make a different track set?

Uhhhh. Most cargo wagons in the game are limited to 70 with the fastest locos that are able to go 140. Then ya got stock cars that are limited to 50. Yeesh.

If you use this mod, will you still keep your other trains if you have the no Obsolete mod, or does it replace them?

Jtanczos, would you buy a much more expensive loco that can get 140 mph if all the wagons can only go 70 mph? I rather save some money and get a loco that can only get 70 mph...

Ajy170, this mod doesn't replace anything, so yes, you well keep them.

In 2038 the difference between 70mph and 140 is $400,000. *shrugs*

But then the Manticore is pretty much obselete as soon as the Gryphon comes out. Unless you only allow it to have passenger carriages attached?

What about making a second version of the mod: the maglev track as modification for the standard track.

It's a little inconvenient (annoying?) to rebuild the entire railroad system.

What else do you expect? Thats the disadvantage of having new track types and one of the features of later TTD life.

Some MagLev considerations

Post by Koen »

Mainly to Rens2Sea:
Maglevs are already racing around (Germany/China), so why not make the first MagLev enter service in 2005, then you could have at least 20 years of "progress" for the MagLev?

For myself I immediately raised the mailcar/Lev3/passengercar speed to 255, for me passengers and mail should be able to go both maximum speed (see also some other topics on this forum about high speed mail cars). Nice idea, Rens2Sea?

Another funny thing I found out tweaking the cars: there is also a limit to the number of passengers you could load in a passenger carriage: 255 (same goes for goods). Could be fun to have really short trains that can carry huge amounts of goods.

P.S. Downloading does not work properly on your homepage, Rens2Sea. That is to say: it works in IE6, but not in Mozilla 1.6. Any idea when I can download version 0.3 with my Mozilla browser?

@Koen: 255 is the limit for any cargo entry in Loco. Since a vehicle can have two entries, the max for any one specific vehicle is 510.

Just out of curiosity, how could you get the maglevs to never breakdown? Is it bcause the reliability is over 200?

I really hate to replace everything every 5 years, so could I end breakdowns simply by making every vehicle have an reliability of 999999?

Actually, it's by setting reliability to 0 which disables breakdowns. And as an aside, the limit for the reliability stat is 255.

Nice mod! :D :D

It would be nice though if the locomotives could be replaced by much smaller (roughly 1/3d the size of a locomotive) "driver cabins" to make them maglevs look really cool. You'd just have to add passenger or freight wagons, with a small head and front piece to make it aerodynamic! That would be nice.

But I am not a 3d designer and a poor developer!

About my mozilla problem: when I click the floppy disk I don't get the download manager (which I get usually), but pages full of weird symbols (guess it's the code of the .rar file). No clue what the problem is.

By the way, MagLev really enriches the game, I can't understand why Chris didn't put it in (like monorail, he could simply have grabbed graphics of his other games).

You could try right click -> Save target as.
