It allows such nice things as increasing the running costs of a plimp with 20 people capacity to 11 million a year. We had fun with that on the Welcome server: People joining, building a plane without looking at costs and going bancrupt ;-)
This post help me a lot and I think that BaseCosts should be integral part of OTTD imho.

If it should be part of OpenTTD integrally, it would just be a matter of changing the initial values of the the base cost.
But doing so would mean all the users would now have to play by these new costs.
Thus removing their freedom to choose original vs alternative base costs.
That's the beauty of newgrf :
1) You don't like? you don't use.
1) You don't like? Pick a grf
3) You want that? Pick THAT grf
etc etc...
Bottom line : customization without recompile
If you are not ready to work a bit for your ideas, it means they don't count much for you.
OpenTTD and Realism? Well... Here are a few thoughs on the matter.

Alternatively, you can add some more settings that make it as customisable as the grf, nd you're done! Only 1 recompile needed ;)

BaseCost 3.2 grf - vehicles build & running costs settings compared to original in OTTD.

What do you think about multipliers (or ratio) for vehicles build & running costs to make game more:
1) realistic (like in real world)
2) challenging (to not become rich very easy/fast)

I think that original vehicles are very cheap, so if I don't change running cost then multiplier for buy vehicles should be equal or above x8.

Of course you may share with us your 'cost sets' not only for vehicles build & running costs :P
