trains reversing on track while open station

Post by nicci »

like the above title says,

the next set of trains waits till the set of trains (that are loading in the station right now) are leaving. but sometimes a train reverses for some reason and is unable to move trough the junction to another lane if that spot is occupied. the problem of this he will wait for a very long time till he reverses again and just enters the open station.

is this a common bug? i tried the 3 different "route finding" options in the advanced settings and i observed each one of them for about a year ingame and it happens a little less with the 2 non-recommended options, but its still happening.

my question is.. is there any way for a train not to reverse at all, ever?

if this is not a bug but just bad networking of me and could be prevented somehow with a different/better layout or any other suggestion you might have, i would be very happy to take on the critism :)

also, if you see anything in my savegame that is bad and could be improved by other means, please tell me.

Open the in-game console. (Use the key that is usually found to the left of the number 1 key. Or use the ?-menu to the far most right in the main toolbar)

Type the following into the console

Code: Select all

setting wait_oneway_signal 255
setting wait_twoway_signal 255
setting wait_for_pbs_path 255
Now you have disabled turn-arounds at all signal types.

It does not fix the problem of trains that have turned around and wait for long long time to turn back. Those you have to fix manually or find which setting that controls that.

Find the above settings in your openttd.cfg file and change the values there as well. Changing them in the .cfg file will change them permanently for every new game that you start. Changing them in the console will only effect the game that you currently have running.

Might I ask why these aren't enabled by default? Or why trains don't turn around only if they are guaranteed a working path?

You mean by default @255, Firestryke31?

 You should see what people build on multiplayer servers - dread-nets, not networks. With such crowded dread-nets it actually helps sometimes to resolve jams (if trains turn around and try reverse path). :)

Then it would be nice if they fixed the bug where a train would turn around at or after a PBS and get stuck that way if it couldn't proceed. I then have to go and babysit (manually reverse) all of the trains that end up getting stuck just because there was one moment of high network activity.

I know this is a little old now, but surely this makes a lot of sense. Trains without PBS would keep "bouncing" backwards and forward in a signal block until it was free. Surely a train in a PBS block should only wait for a path for a certain amount of time before reversing.

It makes no sense for them to sometimes reverse at a signal, but never reverse again if that doesn't work out - it should be both or neither.
