Looks potentially epic. There's not much that can beat the utter brilliance of Sim City 4, though! If you added up all the hours I've been playing SimCity, SC2K, SC3K and SC4 over the years it's probably more time than I've spent at school. :D

That sucks. CitiesXL looks absolutely stunning, both visually and gameplay-wise (and looks almost finished). I really like the way they build bridges and highways :)

Jup, and if they make a tool which can create custom content it would be even better than that. I already lobbied for that, with GSU models of mine.

Never heard of CitiesXL, but the quick look I toke at it makes it seem promising indeed. Looking forward to it

Wow, you're easily convinced :D.

I hope it makes us forget the total failure that "SimCity 5" is.

I feel that CitiesXL is going straight for the money and not for the community as they ask money for GEMS and stuff like that. They have NO PLANS to make the game customizable. So, i promise you, that game will die soon.

This, as you could see in the video, is just a framework... it's a engine where the community can build on to make their 'own' Simcity 4 without limits. That's definitely better then how we have to moderate and create new objects these days for SC4. I mean.. it takes hours and hours to get something done in SC4 (like re texturing) and there is no possibility to add a new zone type..

If this game will improve drastically, i see something has born that can kick ass!

Cities XL does sound impressive. I don't think the game will die off if its as good as they say it will be. But usually I prefer to wait till a game is released to hear about how good it is - you can get a pretty good idea pretty quickly if its any good.

The GEMs idea sounds good, and potentially very clever, to have lots of little business games inside the city framework. I seem to remember Maxis promising that with SimCity 3000 (and never delivering it) - though SimCopter was an early attempt along those lines (for 2000). That was before they sold out and went all corporate.

People who like one generally seem to like the other. Almost certainly a correlation there.

They're both about making a civilization work, more or less. It's pretty much different sides of the same theme

As if that is remotely possible to sustain, its hilarious how fast well planned systems can fall apart. What drives this decline? Greed.

When we are talking about city simulations, what you think about City life? I'm in big thinking to buy it, because I'm dissappointed with SC Societies (Destinations EP didn't change it too much), and I'm bothered of years of playing SC4...

I tried city life, not worth it IMHO.

It lacks potential and the interface just doesnt work too well. THe font is also f-ed up.

Nopes, just not worth it.

Also the graphics are cocky.

Yeah societies sucked hard.

I would love to see someone take the existing DEMs and population/resource geodatabases and make a virtual world. Want to be a real estate developer? A mayor? A railroad tycoon? A steel baron? Whatever you want. In my idea, "Joe" will start a city, "Ted" will site his steel mill there, "Bill" will build a railroad to deliver ore and coal to Ted's mill. "Sam" will start a trucking company to haul steel across town to the stamping plant "Jack" just built, and it all grows from there.
All the industries will demand labor, etc., and the economy will (like in SC4) revolve around keeping the Sim citizens gainfully employed and consuming. Gee, labor is getting short, Ted just raised wages at his steel mill to steal Jack's workers. Joe better zone some more for residential and make sure they can get to work. Oh, by the way, I bought up a bunch of land around Joe's city, so now I stand to turn a tidy profit when "Jane" wants to build McHouses there for Ted and Jack's workers.
Now Ted wants to expand his mill, but land values in Joeville are high and open land scarce. Might another player offer Ted tax breaks to relocate to their simulated city? Bye-bye jobs, and there goes lots of Bill's freight revenue.

Sound crazy, or could it happen?

Sounds like another sim-everything type game :)

I thought there were already attempts to do that around, although the problem is that most people just don't have the free time to devote hours to this sort of thing. I still prefer to play offline games, and only play online games that are turn based.

I bump this topic to tell my impressions about City life (yeah, I bought it despite warnings not to do so :mrgreen: ).

It really might be SimCity sequel. Very nice 3D wiew, possibility to go down in the city and walk through streets... That game really had great potential, but it didn't succeeded as SC sequel, because:

- city developing is too simple;
- number of characters is very limited (only 2-3 of any social group);
- number of buildings is slightly bigger, but still not enough;
- number of vehicles is shamefully small;

So I uninstalled it after one week, put DVD in drawer and turned back to good, old SC4. I expect CitiesXL or some better future SimCity...
