The 1960s off-highway truck can be used with the belly dump trailer; I decided that for this use, the truck would look better with two axles:

That looked pretty good, so I tried the two axle truck with a dump body; I thought it looked really neat, so it can go in the set. This gives about 30t and will be available around 1954.

Finally, an up to date teaser featuring all dump trucks / belly dump rigs drawn so far. There are a few more left to draw. Although this seems like a lot of dump trucks, typically only two or three will be available at any time in the game.

One thing I'd like player input on: the first sprite I drew was an articulated dump truck (ADT).

I would have fun drawing a couple of different versions of these, but I'm not sure they would add much to game play.
- This set is intended to be used with eGRVTS (or NARVS when it's available) which means that there could be perhaps six or even eight trucks in the vehicle list that can carry mineral cargoes. Adding even more seems unnecessary.
- Although the ADTs can be refitted to several other cargoes (there are real life examples for water, goods and logs, and RL can be ignored anyway if it helps gameplay), they will overlap with similar vehicles that will be in the set. For example, they will overlap with the Foremost Delta trucks (examples earlier in the thread), and there will also be plenty of other logging vehicles included.
- One option would be to include ADTs for temperate, and the Foremost Delta trucks for tropic and arctic. That's pretty realistic, but might be overkill.

Thoughts?

95t mining truck - comes later in the game, offers upgraded capacity and hp compared to the 60t version. Two of these will fully load a GCV from MB ship set.

Dolly wheels for a large belly dump: for use with the No. 9 Bulldozer, and as a two trailer mining unit to get a 240t truck that hates going up hills...

It's your set mate, if you believe you'd enjoy putting in the trucks, then stick 'em in there!!! The set will be all the richer for it!

The attachment mining_truck_95t.png is no longer available
Problem with that was, the truck was just plain ugly. Here's an amended 95t version, and for those who like to compare, the (already finished) 60t version:

Zephyris works his magic: here's Heavy Equipment in red, orange and everybody's favourite, white. (Yes, these are screenshots from a real test grf - no promises on a release date yet, but things are happening :) )

He had written it - that's magic :D
I can't wait for this set, really...especially with my fascination about mining trucks ;)

oooooooh! looking really good!
About that first truck you drew, please do include it! I will create some diversity in the game. And this truck was the first toy truck I ever had, so it kind of makes me all nostalgic when I see it :D
I am little, ugly, and nasty. How do you do?

Oops - misleading teaser. Open question - any of you really want giant dump trucks carrying these? They'll be slow and the cargo payment curves are quite steep, so they won't make much money. On the other hand, dump trucks carry gold and diamond ore in real life, and it's not a lot of extra work to include.

I never transport valuables (gold or diamonds) much in my games, so I don't mind either way.

120 tonnes of gold is rather a lot. I assumed it was just all dumped in earth and all considering the amount of gold extracted from a mine is measured in ounces!

Agreed. No gold, no diamonds on dump trucks - drawing these cargoes turns out to be painful (as I have lots of different truck shapes to draw them for)!

cheers,

The grf attached to this post is an old version: v0.2 (HEQS Dump Trucks preview). It has been replaced by an updated HEQS grf featuring many more vehicles. See the first post for the latest grf.

I'm leaving v0.2 available here for anyone who might need it for any reason. GPL licensed.
Heavy Equipment Set (HEQS) preview 1
heqsdt.grf
(59.74 KiB) Downloaded 133 times
Created by andythenorth and Zephyris
Features:
Four dump trucks, covering 1954-2050. Uses second company colour. Trucks should be refittable to all mineral cargoes. These replace the first four buses in the game.

No support :) No warranty :) Beware of reversing trucks :)

Release notes:
- will probably only work with recent builds of OpenTTD (I haven't tested on Patch and won't be able to support Patch).

- in my testing, the extended vehicle pool feature was not required for compatibility with default vehicles ("Enable multiple newGRF engine sets" was off).
- the extended vehicle pool feature was required for compatibility with eGRVTS ("Enable multiple newGRF engine sets" was on). Without this feature enabled, there will be conflicts between the dump trucks and eGRVTS trams.
