Am I doing something wrong ???

Post by drk_411 »

Hi Folks,

Being an inquisitive newbee, opted a new game on 1st Jan, 1500. (yes, that's 1500, coz it went on going and going ).

But found no vehicle.

Now a few questions. When do the vehicles start appearing ?

and if there are no vehicles then why does the game allow to be set before that date ?

It would be fun to have oxen and horse drawn carts like transport giant and have villages with different looks generated than the normal cities having tar roads in 1500 !!!!! ( or let the developers cap the date that the game can be started with )

Depends on which GRF files you have installed.
drk_411 wrote:and if there are no vehicles then why does the game allow to be set before that date ?
Because it is quite possible to have a GRF that provides vehicles during those dates.

It would. Why don't you draw some? (And we do not double our punctuation marks, much less quintuple them.)
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Hi DaleStan,

First of all, an unconditional apology for unintentionally putting exclaimation
marks, one too many that peeved you, but no apologies for the following.

You people at openttd are doing a swell job !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep it up son !

Wish I could draw or code some, but I would make it up with you with something I am good at.

Next week, one blind person would get operated for his cataract FREE of any charge. Would post the necessary details, if you so desire.

I can be a little more accurate with the answer, start in 1950 if you havent got any new train or road set. There wont be anything beforehand otherwise. With the UK road and rail sets you can start in 1920 (maybe earlier). The serbian train set has some going back to 1890 maybe earlier, but i wouldnt reccomend starting then caus you get 30 years with the same slow train. I believe some of the new tram sets will be going back to 1900 and earlier, but 1500 is just a little silly, you'll be playing hte game for months before you even see a train.

Wouldn't a horse drawn carriage be incredibly slow? Possibly slower than the first bus you get without any GRFs...

I have been working on stats (horsepower, capacity, dates, etc.) for pre-1920 vehicles (they're still on my work computer at the moment {break times and lunch- what were you thinking?})

Good idea- I hadn't thought of oxen and mules. I was thinking of a generic "horse" power unit. Oxen are very slow (5 mph) but powerful (3 hp for game purposes?) Mules (1 hp) are slow (10 mph) but cheap, very reliable and have a low operating cost. Draft horses (2 hp, 10 mph) have a high operating cost. Then there is the standard horse (1 hp, 15 mph.) Perhaps, at a high initial cost and high maintenance cost, you could purchase "racehorses" that will do 20 mph for "Royal Mail" type stage coaches. Of course, an 1830s steam powered omnibus is 25 horsepower, and will run all day at 20 mph without having to stop for service five times from Bristol to Carmarthen.

One idea is that horse-drawn vehicles will have such short service intervals that they will need to stop at multiple depots enroute (to change horses.) This means the journey happens in 'stages" - hence the name "stagecoach."

I guess I need to read all the Wiki articles and learn how to create graphics for the vehicles. Current time estimate for this is between the second Tuesday of next week and when the temperature of the infernal region reaches 32F/0C. Seriously, I want to do it- I want to see 4-4-0 Americans and 2-6-0 Moguls running on iron bridges while paddle-wheel steamers cruise the rivers and the original 'station wagon" (1800, 2 horsepower, max speed 15 mph, 8 passengers & 1 crate goods, refittable) moves passengers between the station and Downtown.

This got me thinking of being able to add more animals to the hitch to increase power ("20 mule team Borax, anyone?) which got me thinking of the horses as separate power units for the road vehicles, which got me thinking of "road trains" and being able to upgrade the power unit of a road vehicle from a 1950 200 hp tractor to a 1970 300 hp tractor, or run double/triple trailers. Will post this stuff on the "suggestions" thread.

I was thinking more about the type of steam trains borrowed by the London Metropolitan Railway from the GWR and GNR between 1863 and 1867.

I think those animal speeds are running speeds.
Animals usually work at a walk or they might fall over dead on you.
They probably do about 1-2 mph.

Horses can run at around 40mph...but that's with a rather short man sitting on it's back hitting it with a stick.

Even so, a couple of horses and a cart could probably do about 7mph quite happily.

In all honesty, before the arrival of the canals, transport networks like TT promotes didn't really exist. If something needed to be transported it would be the people themselves doing the transporting and people rarely moved long distances.
