Post by Zephyris »

GRVTS/eGRVTS

GRVTS/eGRVTS are a set of NewGRFs containing various generic road vehicles and trams. There are now several versions available to download, make sure you pick the correct one for you needs!

eGRVTS 2
This is the latest release of the extended GRVTS set. I recommend you choose this one if you are playing OpenTTD. [OpenTTD only]
Available on BaNaNaS

Includes buses, trucks, and trams from 1700 to 2050. This covers horse drawn carriages, steam trucks and buses, articulated and trailer trucks, double decker buses and trams.
There is wide support for NewGRF cargoes, and you will see custom graphics for cargoes from major NewGRF industry sets like FIRS or ECS.

All vehicles have two company colour graphics but are only available in normal zoom level 8-bit graphics.

eGRVTS 1
This is the old release of the extended GRVTS set. In any new games I recommend that you choose eGRVTS 2. [OpenTTD only]
Available on BaNaNaS

Includes buses, trucks, and trams from 1700 to 2050. This covers horse drawn carriages, steam trucks and buses, articulated and trailer trucks, double decker buses and trams.
Can carry cargoes from many industry NewGRFs, including FIRS or ECS, but you won't see custom graphics.

All vehicles have two company colour graphics but are only available in normal zoom level 8-bit graphics. The graphics have been greatly improved in eGRVTS 2.

GRVTS 1

All vehicles have two company colour graphics but are only available in normal zoom level 8-bit graphics.

GRVTS 32bpp
This is the non-extended GRVTS set but with extra zoom level graphics. I recommend you choose this one if you want to play OpenTTD with extra zoom levels [OpenTTD only]

Includes identical buses, trucks and trams to GRVTS 1.

All vehicles have two company colour graphics in full 32bpp and with all extra zoom level graphics.

I just tested this with OpenTTD 1.0.0 and 1.1.5, and eGRVTS2 doesn't appear as available in BaNaNaS, only eGRVTS1. Also does not appear when you download it and install it in the data directory.

eGRVTS 2 installed fine for me. As I checked a few days ago, it is not on bananas, but downloading it and putting it in my grf folder works just fine. Of course, it does not over write the eGRVTS 1 set, you can have both files in the list of available GRFs in OTTD.

The GRVTS 2 set is very nice. The graphics are a HUGE improvement, though they were good in the first version too.

Frankly, one zoom level closer than normal looks good even without the 32bpp set. Most graphics look at minimum, acceptable, at that level. On the other hand, the jagged pixel look has a sort of old style charm for me anyway.

Thanks, I corrected the versions supported; 1.2 and later.

Thanks :D I think the trucks look much better too, and colossal404's tram/bus sprites are excellent.

It says "Includes vehicles from 1980 to 2070" in the "Description" field of eGRVTS2-175. Not a big deal if you know it's not true. ;)

What is the problem? Does it not load? Do you only see 8bpp graphics? Do you get an error message?

First off, most importantly, bug/typo report for latest in-game download of eGRVTS 2 (2-175, I think?) "Mettler Archer with Refridgerated Trailer" is "Mettler rcher with Refridgerated Trailer" (missing the "A").

A quick question. I'm currently fiddling around, trying to determine what NewGRFs to use when I set my next game up (as a break between the final push to 2050!) (My current game is running with eGRVTS 1.0, FISH, Av8 (2.11), FIRS 0.75, BATS, generic trams 0.4, 2cc trains (V2 Beta 5) and the ECS & FIRS vehicle set.)

I've been looking at the OpenGFX+ road and rail sets as well, and the former and the ECS&FIRS vehicle sets raised a query.

What was the reasoning why the running costs of the eGRVTS are so much lower than the default vehicles? I've been using eGRVTS 1.0 (because I didn't know about v2 when I started!) and the original vehicle updates with FIRS, and the latter are just completely outclassed. I'm not complaining or anything (quite the opposite, in fact!), I'm just curious why there was such a drastic difference, especially now I'm at the late game (2028, after starting in 1835 with inflation on!)

As much an anything, I'm wondering why the updated sets for FIRS compatibility haven't made similar changes (i.e. different running costs when FIRS is in play), or is that just outside the limitations of the NewGRF coding to do so an remain compatible with normal or, say ECS (or, equally validly, just not something the programmers care to deal with because it's fiddly for no real gain)? (I know nothing about these things!) Or am I just completely off-base there?

(I'd just leave the basic vehicles off altogether, for road vehicles, but the ECS&FIRS vehicle aircraft have nearly as drastically different (lower) running costs than the av8 planes, and the former also provides some ships with lower running costs and higher speeds than those in FISH...!)

I recommend you update to FISH nightlies, as they feature autorefit (among other cool new features): http://bundles.openttdcoop.org/fish/nightlies/LATEST/

Okay... Sounds good...

How do I do that exactly? Forgive my stupidity...! I presume I manually download the files in that link to somewhere, but where? (I've thus far only used Bananas, is it? The in-game downloader thingy?) The NewGRF folder (either the one in the main directory of the one in the content_download folder...?
