I can understand the sense of buying exclusive rights when two or more competitors carry the same cargo in a town. It seems to me without sense when a competitor buys the rights from town and this affects cargo he does not carry. Maybe there is another explanation of exclusive transport rights mechanism?

It's meant as a way to block competitors from transporting anything in that town. For example, if a large company has a major operation in one particular town, you can cut off a large chunk of their business by buying the rights to that town, even if you don't transport anything there. It makes perfect sense to me. :)

Well, the feature should be named then as "stop any activity of other competitors" not "buy exclusive transport rights" which I mean a different thing.

How so? It doesn't stop the activity, vehicles will still be able to move. It more like denies them the right to transport...

For me it does exactly what it says on the tin. You buy the exclusive rights to transport anything from that town, meaning that other people are not allowed to transport anything.

IIRC it only stops the town from delivering cargo to the competitor stations during a year. If their stations are overcrowded they can keep making money until the stations are drained from cargo.

How is it different?

Suppose I buy exclusive rights, then decide to set up new cargo services? Shouldn't I get all new cargo too then?
In other words, the set of cargoes one transports at the moment exclusive rights are granted is meaningless.

@Alberth: OK, I agree with your arguments. Let's bury the hatchet :)

Zuu is right, if the station is full of cargo, the competitor may not even notice that you bought exclusive rights.

However, I don't think the name is wrong, it's the function that I always disliked. Even if you buy exclusive transport rights for one year (which is a contract that the city should not be able to cancel without you agreeing to it), some one else can just do the same thing and then that player's company will be the one that has exclusive rights.

Luckily it is possible to disable this feature (isn't it? Not 100% sure atm)...

Yes it is, under advanced settings -> economy -> towns -> allow buying exclusive transport rights :)

BTW, I could have sworn the effect only lasts for 6 months, not 1 year. EDIT: Nevermind, I guess it's been changed since I last used it...which was a while ago. ;)
