The Lunar Republic and Mars Invite Colonists and Development

Post by jmc47ott »

I found an unfinished scenario in my old files. It might just interest someone wanting to work with a quirky scenario. It was started with a few names that relate to Lunar features, only about 25% has been done [if that].
Enjoy!

The original intention was to use the "Space" scenario. It disappeared with TTDLX, but has been reinvented by a mod to replace Toyland [i.e. Toyland to Mars Mod]. I really dislike Toyland, and the industries are a poor match for an ET environment. An ambitious player/developer might be able to rewrite it, but I lack the time, skill and interest.

The scenarios are:
Blue Moon--no GRFs, industries or towns, just endless bluegreen forests
Harsh Mistress Moon [homage to Heinlein]--my original basic start-up [as above] but with all GRFs removed
Honey Moon--no GRFs but with more towns, a few industries and lots of honey forests

Feel free to do anything you want with these scenarios. It would be possible to add GRFs and play the last two, but frustrating because of the lack of development and wide open and mostly unusable space.

Honey Moon, as stated above, has no GRFs, a few towns and small cities [more than the original but not many] and lots of honey forests.

Harvest Moon is basically Harsh Mistress Moon with the Toyland to Mars mod added. The save game is not complete but can be realized by using the HMM Scenario, adding the mod and more resources and towns. This is an OTT with no GRFs except the Toyland to Mars Mod.

This is one of those maps just begging for specialised GRFs to go with it. What kind of industries could work on the moon, or Mars? (tons of mining, I'd expect)

I agree, there comes a time [and as soon as possible] when colonies must be free. From the begining they should have as much autonomy as possible. Some of my ancestors [maternal side] were here in Massachusetts in time to participate in the revolution, the others came later.

Lots of mining, maybe, but interplanetary costs for bulky raw materials might be prohibitive. They would need to mine for water and turn some of it into O to breathe and H2 for fuel. So Ice mine to water purification plant and to H2 fuel processor. A lot of water could be used for hydroponic production of food, so some would go to farms.

Farms would also be producing waste [as would the colonists] so waste to waste treatment plant and or factory for recycling.

If Space based scenarios become popular enough maybe one of the software engineers [modders?] will take an interest in upgrading the infantile "Candyland" scenario to real space opera material.
Hopefully space colonies won't need their "Bunker Hill" moment.

Water from Mars' polar ice mines would, due to the cold climate, require rail transport rather than pipelines.

Later, as population and demand increase, the simple terminal would need to be replaced by a R-O-R-O facility.
Together with double tracking, a Roll On Roll Off facility would allow continuous supply.

Hydroponic farming will be necessary, so organizations and corporations will be needed to develop food supplies for Mars. Mars Agriculture Authority receives Martian polar ice water and other resources and produces agricultural products to be converted into food for the colonists.

Marsman Industries receives the raw material and produces food and byproducts. The byproducts [including methane] are transferred to Mars Cycle, Inc. for recycling. Because methane is explosive [hence its use as fuel] occasional methane explosions occur in the vicinity of M.C.I. plants.

Points to PikkaBird  I always loved his work here... Shame it was an apparent April fool (Note the release date), would have been great for this sort of game...

As to the thread, looking forward to seeing more shots; it's good to see the old Mars Landscape in use again and jmc47ott your shots have come on so much in such a short time. Great Stuff!

Thanks Jaxob D88,
Here's another Martian Industry shot. M. A. I. C. [Mars Agriculture & Industry Combine] would be private corporation engaged in raw materials recovery and processing.

On behalf of the mars Development Authority, Mars Free State, I am pleased to post a game in progress. It is running on v1.1.1 and will not be alterable. I have therefore provided a screenshot of the city of Ptarth with GRF list.

How about an ongoing storyline to go along with the screenies?

Hi Wallyweb,

Thanks for the compliment and the idea. There is an implicit storyline, and the shot [above] of the flag from the American Revolution was somewhat political. This wasn't the first anti-colonial revolt if you count the classical world, but was the first modern one. I am wary of going off topic these days because of my ill-fated attempt to mix OTD, railroads and political humor. What a bummer! Please note that the command economy-style state organs [Mars Development Authority] are acquiring capitalist competition such as the attached [which will probably end up a subsidiary of a well-known American international beverage company]. I have read a few SciFi novels and short stories on this topic. I suppose I could always locate and recommend one or two.

Thanks again and enjoy the screen shots,

Nobody loves poor Benny,

For a better lifestyle he accepted British gold to betray his comrades, and the British never completely trusted him [who would trust a traitor for gold?].

Eventually the colonists will be caught between statist Bruxellian bureaucrats and callous profit driven corporations. This will, eventually give rise to the Mars Resistance Organization [M.R.O.]. They will originally be idealists who try to arouse the sheeple to take power away from the bureaucrats and corporatists.

sheeple = пасивними і неосвічених мас, if I understand your logo correctly and if Googletranslate is trustworthy. Otherwise the passive and uninvolved who don't take their duties as citizens seriousely. Those who don't think for themselves, believe all ads, and follow any leader unquestioningly.

To keep order for the countries and companies colonizing Mars, the United Nations Colonial Authority [UNCA] has been established at New Brussels/Stad von Niew Brussel. The need to refer to the bureaucrats of New Brussels on any important matter becomes a source of irritation to a faction of the colonists who joke about the supine figure on the New Brussels coat of arms representing the Martians.

Despite the treaties prohibiting weaponization of space, despite the bureaucratic regulations and inspections, the inevitable has happened. A corporation [no doubt supported by or at the behest of its parent and its country of origin] has decided to augment profit by conducting research into military uses of the unique Martian environment. The Rarham Industrial complex has been found to have a secret research program housed in the Area 51 labs.
